Barnsley bin collection days

Barnsley uses four wheelie bins by colour: grey for general waste, blue for paper and card, brown for mixed recycling, and green for garden waste between March and November. Food waste goes in the grey bin because of a transitional arrangement that runs to 2040. Collection days come from the council's check your bin day service.

Food waste and the national recycling rules

Barnsley has a transitional arrangement for weekly food waste. Barnsley has a transitional arrangement from Defra that lets it carry on collecting food waste with general waste in the grey bin until 2040. The council says this is possible because all residual waste from Barnsley, Doncaster and Rotherham goes to the BDR Waste Treatment Facility at Bolton upon Dearne.

Garden waste

Garden waste arrangements vary across the area. Garden waste collections take place from March to November only. There are no green bin collections in December, January or February.

If your bin was missed

If the whole street was missed and it is not listed on the disruptions page, use the online missed bin form. If only your bin was missed, the council cannot return for it and will empty it on your next scheduled collection day. Do not report before 2:30pm on your collection day, because crews may still be on the way. Do not report if the bin was out late, the wrong bin, or tagged for a damaged bin, closed lid or contamination, because those need fixing first.

Good to know in Barnsley

  • Barnsley says its recycling is sent to different mills, so what goes in each coloured bin matters. A crew that finds the wrong items leaves a contamination tag and does not empty the bin until the next scheduled collection.
  • Put your bin out at the kerbside or collection point before 6am on collection day, and not before 12pm the day before. Take it away by 12pm the day after. In exceptional cases, such as an assisted collection, the council tells you by letter that you may leave the bin out permanently.
  • Leave the bin with the handles towards the road and next to a neighbour's bin if you can. The lifting mechanism on the council's wagons has a 50kg limit, so an overfilled or too heavy bin can be tagged and left.
  • Compacted or frozen material that does not fall out is not loosened by the crew. You need to loosen the contents so that it can be emptied on the next scheduled collection day.
  • An extra grey bin is available to homes with six or more people, to homes with five people including two or more children under 3, or for healthcare waste. It costs £45 unless it is for healthcare waste. Extra blue or brown bins for six or more people are free.
  • Textiles that could be recycled, toys, carpets, furniture, electrical items and batteries do not belong in the grey bin and can go to a household waste recycling centre.

Bin questions in Barnsley

What goes in the Barnsley brown bin?

Glass bottles and jars, food tins, drink cans, plastic bottles, pots, tubs and trays, liquid cartons, empty aerosols and clean foil. Rinse containers and remove film lids; plastic bags and film do not go in.

Does Barnsley collect food waste separately?

Not yet. The council says it has a transitional arrangement from Defra, allowing food waste in the grey general waste bin until 2040.

When can I put my bin out in Barnsley?

From 12pm the day before and before 6am on collection day, then remove it by 12pm the day after. The lid must be fully closed, and a bin that is overfilled or heavier than 50kg can be tagged and not emptied.

Can I get an extra bin in Barnsley?

Yes in some cases: an extra grey bin if six or more people live in your home, if five including two children under 3 live there, or for healthcare waste, and an extra blue or brown bin for six or more people.
