Basingstoke and Deane is about to change how often its main bins come. Until 12 October 2026 the council still empties the black or grey rubbish bin every week, which it says makes it the only waste collection authority in Hampshire to do so. From Monday 12 October 2026 the rubbish bin and the green recycling bin are collected on alternate weeks, glass every two weeks and food waste every week, and calendar leaflets with the new dates were posted in September.

Food waste and the national recycling rules
Basingstoke and Deane collects food waste every week. Basingstoke and Deane collects food waste every week, in a silver indoor caddy and a larger green outdoor caddy, or a brown communal bin for flats. All food waste must be in a liner or a reused plastic bag. A separate vehicle collects the food from the waste, recycling and glass vehicles.
Garden waste is a paid-for service. As of 3 October 2026 the garden waste subscription costs, from 1 April 2026, £87 a year for a 240-litre bin or £60 for a 140-litre bin, plus a one-off £44 for the bin itself, which makes £131 or £104 in the first year. Discounted annual charges of £59 and £32 are available by phone to people claiming housing benefit, council tax support or the housing element of Universal Credit. Subscriptions last 12 calendar months from joining and are not refundable. The service has 25 fortnightly collections a year and stops for two weeks over Christmas and New Year. Collection days do not move for bank holidays. The council says new sign-ups currently start on the closest collection day, 20 working days after joining.
The council has an online form to check for collection delays and to report a missed bin. Bins need to be presented by 6am at the point nearest the public highway where the collection vehicle stops, with your property name or number on them. Recycling bins containing items the council does not collect may not be emptied, and wrong items in the glass box or food caddy may also leave them uncollected. Garden waste subscribers should leave the container out, and the council aims to put a miss right within two working days. The form can be used after 6pm on your collection day. The council's windows are 48 hours (two working days) for garden waste, recycling, glass and the waste bin, and 24 hours (the end of the following working day) for food waste. Check its delays list first.
The council's own pages are dated either side of the change. Its collections page already describes the rubbish bin as fortnightly, while the household rubbish bin is still weekly until 12 October 2026. Check the collection day look-up for your address, because your day may also change.
Put bins out by 6am at the point nearest the public highway where the collection vehicle stops, which may be the pavement or road at the end of a path or drive. Put your property name or number on the bin. The council can post stickers.
Recycling must go in the green bin loose, clean and dry, never in a plastic bag. Only plastic bottles are accepted from home because Hampshire County Council's sorting plant cannot process pots, tubs, trays, tubes or cartons yet. A new plant is planned to let the council collect more plastics from 2028.
Until then, plastic pots, tubs, trays and film can go in the rubbish bin or to the temporary mixed plastic banks at the council's six recycling sites, which also take small electricals, textiles, footwear and foil.
Extra recycling can go next to the green bin in clear liners from supermarkets, and a one-off request can bring two clear recycling sacks. A 140-litre green bin can be swapped free for a 240-litre one, and an extra recycling bin is free on request.
Standard waste bins are 140 litres for one or two people and 240 litres for households of three or more. A glass box costs £3 and a red 140-litre glass bin £42 if you want one.
Bulky collections are charged by item count for 2026/27 and start at £31 for a single piece. As of 3 October 2026 the pages read gave no dated Christmas collection timetable, other than a two-week pause in garden waste.
The council's collections page says the paper and cardboard that goes in the green recycling bin should not include shredded paper, gift wrap or yellow pages.
