Bedford bin collection days

Bedford Borough collects on an alternate-week pattern with a weekly food waste service on top. One week the black bin and the outdoor food bin are emptied; the next week it is the orange lid recycling bin, the green lid garden bin if you have one, and the food bin again. Bedford is a unitary borough, so it runs collections and the Barkers Lane recycling centre itself. Recycling goes loose into one orange bin, rather than being sorted into boxes.

Service disruption

Garden waste collections are suspended over winter, between 1 December and 1 March each year, and the bin day page says they run from 1 March to 30 November.

This can change quickly. We last checked on ; the council’s own page has the latest.

Food waste and the national recycling rules

Bedford collects food waste every week. Bedford Borough introduced weekly food waste collections for houses and flats from 30 March 2026. Houses and flats with their own wheelie bins have a kitchen caddy and an outdoor food waste bin; blocks with shared bins have a kitchen caddy and use the communal food bin.

If your bin was missed

You can report a missed bin only if you live in the borough, put the bin out in the right place by 6am, report within 2 working days, did not overload it, and the orange bin held only recyclables. Enter your postcode in the council's online tool, choose your address, pick the earlier collection and select Report missed bin. If the criteria are met the crew returns within two working days. If the collection still shows as scheduled, the council says it knows it was not completed and will be back the next day. Report within 2 working days of the original collection day.

Good to know in Bedford

  • Weekly food waste collections for houses and flats began on 30 March 2026. If you still have no caddies, the council asks you to request them through its page on replacing damaged or missing bins and food caddies.
  • Leave bins at the edge of your property, closest to the highway, by 6am on collection day and bring them in as soon as possible. The council says it can issue a £75 fixed penalty notice if bins are left out for more than 24 hours after your collection.
  • Extra recycling can go next to a full orange bin in a clear or white transparent bag, or in a cardboard box in dry weather only. Large cardboard must be flat packed and wet cardboard is not taken. Prioritise glass for the bin over the extra recycling.
  • Kitchen caddy liners can be any plastic bag or newspaper, which differs from many councils. The council says the liners are removed at the processing site before the food waste is treated.
  • Used household batteries (6V, D, C, AA, AAA, 9V and button) can be put in a small sealed clear bag on top of the black or orange bin on collection day, never inside it.
