Bromley bin collection days

Bromley collects food waste every week and alternates the rest. One week the crew takes your food waste, your black box of paper and card and your refuse; the next week they take food waste and your green box of bottles, cans, glass and plastic. That means refuse and each recycling box are collected every other week, and the council does not supply a container for refuse.

Food waste and the national recycling rules

Bromley collects food waste every week. Bromley collects food waste every week, in a container that goes out at the edge of the property by 7am. It is processed in an anaerobic digestion plant. The weekly collection runs alongside a fortnightly alternation between the black box (paper) with refuse, and the green box.

Garden waste

Garden waste is a paid-for service. A 12 month subscription costs £80, which the council works out at £1.54 a week, and includes a 240 litre wheelie bin that is delivered in about two weeks. During the nine months of the gardening season, March to November, collections are every other week. For the remaining three months of the year collections are once a month. There are also weekend green garden waste drop-off sites.

If your bin was missed

Leave your recycling and waste out until the end of the day before reporting a missed collection. If your container was not at the edge of your property by 7am you are asked to wait until your next collection day. The council publishes a page of streets affected by delays, so check that first. If a collection was genuinely missed, report it to the council or call 0300 303 8658. Report a missed collection within two working days of the collection.

Your nearest tip

Good to know in Bromley

  • The council does not provide a bin for refuse. Put non-recyclable waste out in black sacks, or equivalent, that fit easily into a standard dustbin. If you use your own wheelie bin it must comply with safety regulation EN840 and be bagged inside, because collection teams may need to tip it onto the back of the vehicle.
  • Recycling containers are supplied by the council, and you can ask for another black or green box if you need one. Do not use black bags instead of boxes, because the crew might mistake your recycling for rubbish.
  • Put containers at the edge of your property within arm's reach of the pavement by 7am, and not directly on the pavement. Items hidden behind a locked gate or a parked car may not be collected, and a missed collection cannot be reported in that case.
  • Batteries, small electrical items, clothes and textiles are also collected on your collection day. Heavy items over 25 kg, bulky waste, garden waste and hazardous waste are not part of the regular collection.
  • Large cardboard that does not fit in the black box can be left in a neat bundle of about 2ft by 3ft next to it. If cardboard is not flattened, or there is a significant volume, the crew will not take it.
  • If you cannot put your recycling and waste out for collection or need assistance, call the council on 0300 303 8658.
