Burnley bin collection days

Burnley's recycling page lists what the general waste bin takes and does not publish a leave-out list for it, so none is invented here. How often that bin is emptied is on the council's own bin day service, not on the contents page. A weekly food caddy starts in the week of 13th-17th April 2026. Garden waste is a paid brown bin with a green sticker, £40 for 2026/27.

Food waste and the national recycling rules

Burnley does not collect food waste every week. As of 3 October 2026 the separate food round had not started. Burnley says it is introducing a weekly food waste collection from the week of 13th-17th April 2026, on the same day as the other waste and recycling. Caddies and a leaflet are delivered before it starts. Replacement liners will be delivered twice a year, in June and December, rather than when a liner is tied to the caddy. The next delivery is the week commencing 1st June 2026. Each delivery is 2 rolls. Liners can also be collected from Contact Burnley on Parker Lane, BB11 2BY, Monday to Friday.

Garden waste

Garden waste is a paid-for service. The 2026/27 subscription is £40 a year, which the council describes as £2 a collection across 20 collections. An extra bin ordered and paid for in the same transaction is £35. A green sticker is posted after you subscribe. Allow 10 days for it to arrive. The sticker covers the service until the end of March 2027. Only paid garden bins are collected. The garden page does not call the round fortnightly. It says there are 20 collections a year. An overflowing bin may be too heavy for the lift and may be left.

If your bin was missed

The bin needs to have been out by 6:30am, in the right place, safe to move and not overweight, with only the right materials in it. A missed collection cannot be logged until the following day. A return may take up to two working days, and longer if there is a problem with the round. Crews will not come back for a contaminated recycling container, such as a grey paper and card bin that contains plastic bags. A reported missed garden bin is collected the following Friday. Vehicles have cameras so staff can check whether the bin was out. Log a missed collection within six days of the scheduled collection date.

Good to know in Burnley

  • The recycling page also describes a blue bin or box for plastic bottles, pots and tubs, cartons, tins and glass bottles and jars, and a grey bin or white sack for paper and card. Those sections do not include a don't list, so they are not written up as separate streams.
  • A replacement refuse wheelie bin is £35.70. A household is entitled to one refuse bin. It must be out by 6.30am. The missed-bin page writes the same time as 6:30am.
  • Food liners go in the kitchen caddy. Tie the liner and put it in the outdoor bin with the lockable lid closed. Ready-meal packaging comes off first. Liquids, oil and any packaging stay out.
  • The garden charge started in summer 2017. The council says 20% of the average household dustbin is organic material and points people who do not subscribe at home composting. If you do not want the bin, the council will collect it.
  • Lancashire County Council runs the household waste recycling centres. Burnley's own page links to Lancashire Recycles and does not name the sites.
  • The bin day and missed-bin forms both warn that you may need a new account while the council upgrades its systems.
