Mid Devon collects rubbish in a black wheeled bin, recycling in a black box and a green box, and food in a blue caddy. The rubbish page describes an 180L bin and asks you to use a liner so waste does not blow out. The council's what-can-you-put-out page says that non-recyclable waste is collected three weekly, recycling fortnightly and food weekly. Garden waste is optional and paid for. Nothing left beside the bin is taken.

Mid Devon collects food waste every week. Food is collected every week in a blue 23L kerbside caddy with a lockable lid. The council says the weekly round keeps the caddy small and the food from rotting. Liners can be a compostable liner, a plastic bag, or a small amount of kitchen roll or newspaper. The council no longer replaces the old 5L kitchen caddy. Food from Mid Devon goes to an anaerobic digestion plant in the UK.
Garden waste is a paid-for service. A 240ltr brown bin is £72.00 a year and a 140ltr slimline bin is £61.00 a year, paid up front for a 12-month period. Each extra bin is charged at the same yearly rate. Compostable sacks are £1.80 each, with no subscription, and only council sacks are collected. Subscribed bins are emptied every other week. A permit has to be stuck on the bin. A bin with no valid permit gets a reminder sticker and can be removed if that continues. You can share a bin with a neighbour if it is put out at the subscriber's property, and you can leave council sacks beside a stickered bin.
Check the daily waste collection updates first. If your road is already listed, follow that advice and do not report again. Otherwise use the missed collection form, or call 01884 255255. The council investigates and, if the miss is confirmed, aims to return within 2 working days. Report within 2 working days. Bins, bags and boxes need to have been at the kerbside the night before or by 6am, on the right day and week, with the right materials. Side waste next to or on top of a wheelie bin or seagull sack is no longer collected.
The black recycling box takes glass, paper, tins and most plastics. The green box takes cardboard and cartons for drinks and liquid food. Both are fortnightly. The recycling page does not publish a longer item-by-item list; it points to an A to Z for anything more specific.
Use a Mid Devon black bin for rubbish. The crew will not empty another council's bin, or the brown garden bin, on the rubbish round. Bulky items are not taken at the kerbside. Cooled ash can go in the rubbish, not in the brown bin.
The blue food caddy is 23L. Push the handle down to lock the lid. Raw meat and bones are accepted. Pet waste, liquids, oil and packaging are not. A kitchen bin at home is for transferring food into the caddy. The old 5L indoor caddy is no longer replaced.
Garden subscriptions are £72.00 for a 240ltr bin or £61.00 for a 140ltr bin. Sacks are £1.80 and have to be the council's own. Branches must be less than 10cm across. A little hay or straw is allowed if it has no paper, cardboard or faeces. Customer services for a damaged brown bin are customerservices@middevon.gov.uk or 01884 255255.
The missed collection page says most collections are fortnightly and tells you to check the right week. That sits alongside the three-weekly rubbish round. Put containers out the night before or by 6am, where they can be seen. A sticker or advice slip means follow that note and wait for the next scheduled collection.
