Stroud bin collection days

Stroud collects a grey bin for rubbish and a green bin plus box for recycling on alternate fortnights, and a grey food bin every week on the same day as whichever of those is due. Garden waste is a paid brown bin or, where a lorry cannot reach, booked compostable sacks, fortnightly from February to the end of November. The grey bin page has a yes and no table that did not separate into two lists when read, so this page uses only the sentences around that table.

Food waste and the national recycling rules

Stroud collects food waste every week. Food waste goes in a grey food bin once a week, on the same day as the refuse or recycling, with a smaller kitchen caddy emptied into it. Liners can be plastic bags, bin liners, biodegradable bags or newspaper. Put it out by 6am. The page shows an acceptable and not-accepted table. Those two columns did not come through as separate lists, so the foods are not repeated here. Small batteries and vapes can go out weekly with the food waste.

Garden waste

Garden waste is a paid-for service. The garden page says the wheeled bin is provided at a charge and does not print the price. New subscriptions for 2026 are closed. The page says to check back in November to subscribe for 2027. The brown bin becomes the resident's property. A lost or stolen bin is not replaced free. Collections are fortnightly from the beginning of February to the end of November. A 180 litre bin is delivered before the end of January, or within 10 working days if ordered after the scheme has started. Present it before 6am. Bag customers, on rounds a bin lorry cannot reach, get 50 compostable sacks and must book each collection. Up to 2 sacks a time, filled no earlier than 2 days before, and no heavier than 20kg. There is no refund.

If your bin was missed

Report online after checking the service updates and that it was your day, the container was at the edge of the property, and it was out in time. A garden bin the contractor missed should also be reported. The council aims to return within 48 hours and says it may take up to 5 working days. Snow and ice can keep the crews at the depot. Unless told otherwise, leave the containers out. A replacement grey bin is via customer.services@stroud.gov.uk or 01453 766321. The council does not offer a smaller or larger grey bin. Containers go out by 6am. Collections start from 6:00am. Missed bins should be reported within 2 days of the scheduled collection.

Good to know in Stroud

  • Recycling must be loose, out by 6am. Cardboard is folded to about the box size and can go underneath the box. The no list includes glass milk bottles, which is a different instruction from ordinary glass bottles and jars, which are accepted. Batteries and vapes are weekly with the food waste, not in the green bin.
  • The grey bin takes only non-recyclable waste, lid shut, nothing beside it. There is one size. A replacement is arranged on 01453 766321 or by email. The page explains that different sizes were rejected because households change and the council did not want to keep swapping bins.
  • Food liners are removed by a shredder before anaerobic digestion. Biogas goes to the gas grid and the liquid digestate goes on local farmland. The food page does not name the plant.
  • Garden subscriptions for 2026 are closed. The charge is not printed on the page. Terms up to and including 15th March 2026 are on that page. Terms for bookings from 16th March 2026 are linked elsewhere and were not the page read here. A missed garden collection is aimed for within 48 hours and may take 5 working days. No refunds, including when severe weather moves the round.
  • The missed page, when read, asked some residents affected by roadworks to put food containers out again on Tuesday 6 October, and said one closure was expected until the end of Friday 2 October. That is a service update, not the ordinary rule. The ordinary rule is to report within 2 days.
  • As of 3 October 2026 the garden page also described home composting and said the average household bin contains 43% organic material. Gloucestershire County Council's compost-bin offer is linked from that page.
