Central Bedfordshire collects black bin refuse and dry recycling on alternate weeks, with food waste every week. The dry recycling bin has a green lid in the north of the area and an orange lid in the south. Garden waste is an opt-in subscription with a permit sticker, and the council runs a booking system for its four tidy tips.

Food waste and the national recycling rules
Central Bedfordshire collects food waste every week. Food waste is collected every week on your normal collection day, in a 7-litre indoor caddy and a 23-litre outdoor food waste bin. Flats can have a communal food waste bin or an outdoor bin.
Garden waste is a paid-for service. Every permit costs £58.23 and the council does not offer concessions, including for Council Tax Support. The service is optional and opt-in, and direct debit and monthly instalments were not available. The council said that subscribing by 17 March 2026 meant a permit sticker arrived before the service started on 1 April 2026. Later subscribers get the pack within 10 working days, with collections starting from the next scheduled day. Subscriptions do not renew automatically.
Use the council's online form. First check that you left the bin out by 7am at the boundary of your property, and that it was not left unemptied for another reason: a red tag for the wrong items, unacceptable waste in a domestic or garden bin, bad weather, a blocked road, or a bin that was too heavy. Missed collections must be reported within 2 working days of the scheduled collection day. A red tag means the bin will not be emptied until the next scheduled collection day. A standard 240 litre bin has a 70kg weight limit. A missed food waste bin should be reported within 48 hours.
Check the lid colour before assuming which bin you have: the council supplies a green-lid recycling bin to residents in the north and an orange-lid one to residents in the south. Houses that cannot fit a bin can order refuse sacks.
Recycling must be clean, dry and squashed, and placed loose. The council says it will not collect a recycling bin containing black sacks or other plastic bags. Large cardboard should be torn to about A4 size, because cardboard left beside the bin is not taken.
Soft and flexible plastics such as crisp packets, biscuit wrappers and bread wrappers cannot go in the recycling bin. For recycling they go to most supermarkets, otherwise they go in the black bin.
Batteries, small electricals, textiles and shoes should be bagged separately and placed beside the bin on collection day. The council says not to put batteries and electricals in a bin, because they can cause fires.
The garden waste permit costs the same for everyone, with no concessions, and the council says it is an opt-in service. If you do not subscribe you do not need to tell the council, and garden waste can go to a tidy tip or be composted at home.
Tidy tips need a free booking for a 20-minute time slot, which you can make up to 2 weeks in advance. The sites at Ampthill, Biggleswade, Leighton Buzzard and Thorn Turn have automated barriers, so the booking must carry the right vehicle registration number.
A red tag on a recycling bin means it contained the wrong items. Remove them and put the bin out on the next scheduled day: the crew do not return, and you can use a tidy tip if you cannot wait.
