Most Ealing homes have a black rubbish wheeled bin and a blue recycling wheeled bin that go out on alternate weeks, with a small green food waste bin collected every week. Everything recyclable goes loose and mixed in the blue bin. Garden waste is a paid subscription with a winter pause.

Food waste and the national recycling rules
Ealing collects food waste every week. Food waste is collected every week from the small green food waste bin on your scheduled collection day, and is taken to a processing plant that generates electricity and a farm fertiliser. Flats empty their kitchen caddy into the communal recycling bin area.
Garden waste is a paid-for service. For the April 2026 to March 2027 service year the subscription is £75 for 23 collections, or £50 at the concessionary and second subscription rate. Joining for July 2026 to March 2027 costs £52.17 for 16 collections (£34.78 concessionary), and from October 2026 £29.35 for 9 collections (£19.57 concessionary). The price includes the bin or bags. Garden waste is collected every 2 weeks except in winter. The council says collections pause in December 2026 and start again during February 2027, a winter pause cut from 11 weeks to 8 weeks. Only bins with the calendar sticker and sacks with a tag are collected.
Use the council's online form to report a missed household collection. Check that you put your rubbish and recycling out at the boundary of your property before 7am, that the crew has already visited your road (food waste may be collected at a different time), and that there is no tag on the bin explaining why it was left. Report from 5pm on your collection day and by 1pm on the day after. The council says it will come back and collect by the end of the next working day. If the online form is unavailable, phone the contact centre on 020 8825 6000.
The blue bin is a single mixed bin: paper, card, plastics, cans, glass and cartons all go in together, loose and clean. Soft plastics such as carrier bags, bread bags and crisp packets do not, and the council points people to supermarket collection points for them.
Textiles and batteries are collected from the top of the blue bin but must never go inside it, because the council says batteries cause fires in bin lorries and recycling centres. Put them in a clear plastic bag on top of the bin.
A white tag on a recycling bin means it contained something that cannot be recycled, was not presented correctly or could not be reached. The council says not to report a tagged bin as missed. Remove the wrong items and the tag, and present it by 7am on your next recycling day.
The standard wheeled bin is 180 litres, which the council says holds up to 4 rubbish bags. A larger 360 litre bin can be requested for a large household or medical need, once the council has checked you are recycling as much as you can. A new or replacement standard bin costs £50 and the larger bin £75.
Flats above shops are handled differently: loose black sacks at a set collection point for rubbish, and free clear mixed recycling sacks delivered 3 times a year. Some locations have communal bins instead, and the collection day finder shows which service your address gets.
The council collects bulky items for a fee: up to 6 items such as sofas, beds, wardrobes and non-commercial fridge freezers for £30.
You must book before visiting the Greenford Road reuse and recycling centre, and cars may stay for a maximum of 30 minutes. Garden waste is accepted free of charge for composting at the Greenford Road and Abbey Road centres.
