Hartlepool bin collection days

Hartlepool's what-can-I-recycle page names a grey bin for paper, cardboard, plastics and tins, a green bin for non-recyclable household waste, a brown garden bin if you subscribe, and food caddies. It does not publish leave-out lists for the grey or green bin, so none are invented here. Garden waste has a full yes and no list. Food is weekly. Collection days are an address search, Tuesday to Friday, with bins out by 7:30am.

Food waste and the national recycling rules

Hartlepool collects food waste every week. Hartlepool says food waste is collected weekly, and that households should have received caddies except some communal and rural properties. The food page lists what counts as food waste. It does not publish a separate leave-out list. Side waste is not accepted, and all food waste has to fit in the bins. A fee applies for a replacement 23-litre bin. Replacement indoor caddies are not supplied. Crews may tip caddies into a 140-litre bin before loading the truck.

Garden waste

Garden waste is a paid-for service. The annual garden subscription is £41. An additional bin is £27 plus a one-off charge for the extra bin. Subscribe before 31 March to receive all 8 collections. Signing up later still costs the full price and only the remaining collections are made. The service is seasonal, from April to November. Collections begin from Tuesday 7 April 2026. It may take up to 4 weeks to reach every area, and the first date is confirmed when you sign up. A non-transferable sticker has to be on the bin. Garden waste goes in loose, not in plastic bags. Bins should be out for 7.30am. If a garden bin is not emptied, check for a tag in case it was too heavy or contained the wrong items, then report it online. You have 14 days to cancel without charge. If you do not subscribe, garden waste can go to the household waste recycling centre on Burn Road, or be composted at home. The council asks residents to keep the brown bin.

Good to know in Hartlepool

  • The grey and green descriptions are one line each. Items that do not go in household bins are pointed at the household waste recycling centre, with electricals and bulky waste given as examples. That is not a don't list for either bin.
  • Food includes peelings, tea bags, coffee grounds, plate scrapings, meat and fish, dairy, eggshells, bread, rice, pasta and pet food. Each household gets one roll of liners with the bins. More liners are bought from supermarkets. Indoor caddies are not replaced by the council. A replacement 23-litre outdoor bin has a fee. No side waste is taken.
  • Flats get an indoor caddy and a communal outdoor bin. If a flat has not had a caddy, the waste team is on 01429 523333 or waste.management@hartlepool.gov.uk. Assisted collections are taken from the property. Number or sticker the bin so it can be identified after collection.
  • Garden waste must be loose. The no list includes anything not on the yes list, and names general waste, food, plastic, vegetable peelings, egg shells, tea bags, coffee grounds, tree trunks, soil, rubble, dead animals, pet bedding, animal waste and nappies. The sticker is needed for the bin to be emptied and cannot be transferred.
  • Subscribe before 31 March for all 8 collections. The charge is still £41 if you join later. An extra bin is £27 plus a one-off bin charge. Collections start from Tuesday 7 April 2026 and may take up to 4 weeks to reach every area. Put the bin out for 7.30am. The garden page writes the time with a dot. The bin day page writes 7:30am.
  • A subscription can be transferred if you move. Cancel within 14 days without charge. Lost or stolen stickers are free. A replacement bin has a charge. If you do not join, Burn Road household waste recycling centre takes garden waste, with limitations, or you can compost at home.
