North Tyneside uses a green bin for household waste, a grey bin for recycling with a glass caddy fixed in the top, and a brown bin for garden waste that costs £35 a year. General waste and recycling are both collected every two weeks, between Tuesday and Friday. Weekly food waste collections are only starting in phases from August 2026.

Food waste and the national recycling rules
North Tyneside does not collect food waste every week. A free weekly food waste collection is being phased in. The council said the rollout would begin in the week commencing August 17 2026, starting with four wards chosen for a balanced spread, with residents told in advance when their service starts and Phase 2 covering the rest of the borough. Kerbside homes get a 5-litre kitchen caddy and a 23-litre outdoor caddy; communal properties get a shared 140-litre or 240-litre bin. Until your area starts, food waste goes in the green bin.
Garden waste is a paid-for service. There is a £35 annual charge for garden waste collections in North Tyneside. For the 2026 season, the council said subscriptions needed paying by 20 February 2026 to guarantee every collection; later payers could wait up to four weeks for their sticker and calendar. You can cancel within 14 days of paying, and the council allows no cancellations or refunds after that. The council says its garden waste subscription runs by season, with a sticker and calendar issued to subscribers. The pages read on 3 October 2026 did not give the collection frequency.
If your bin has not been collected by the morning after your usual collection day, complete the council's online missed bin form. Check first that it was at the kerbside by 6.30am and not contaminated: the grey bin is not collected if it holds rubbish, and the brown bin is not collected if contaminated or too heavy. Collections can run up to 5pm on collection day, so wait until the next morning before reporting.
Put the green bin out at the kerbside no later than 6.30am on collection day, and no earlier than the evening before. The council says bank holidays do not change collections except at Christmas and New Year.
The grey bin is for recycling only and will not be collected if it holds rubbish. Its caddy must stay in the bin because for safety reasons it is not collected unless the caddy is in place. If you have more glass than fits, use your nearest recycling site or keep it until the next collection.
Recycling is collected on the same day as rubbish but at a different time of day, so the two bins may be emptied at different times. Only recycling that is washed and squashed, with no black plastic or plastic films, should go in.
The council's food waste pages say residents in each phase will automatically receive the service with an introductory letter and do not need to sign up. Food waste is collected weekly on the same day as recycling and refuse. Anyone who prefers not to take part can opt out and keep their current services.
Households with six or more people, or someone with a medical condition, can ask for a larger bin. The council also has a reusable nappy cash back scheme and a subsidised composting offer.
The tip at Wallsend Road is for North Tyneside residents only and it is illegal for businesses to use it. Everyone needs an appointment, and some vehicles, including vans, need a permit.
