Hastings collects household rubbish either in twin bins or, in some areas, as a weekly bag or seagull-proof sack. Recycling goes in a green bin, loose, or in pink sacks where those are issued. Garden waste is a paid brown bin at £85 for 12 months, collected every two weeks. Weekly food collections are required, and the food page does not publish a contents list.

Hastings collects food waste every week. Hastings says every council in England now has to carry out weekly food waste collections, and that food waste makes up about 30% of the average household waste bin. The food page tells you to put the outside container out by 7am, or by 6am where that earlier time is already required. It does not list what the caddy takes or what to leave out, so no food contents list is written here.
Garden waste is a paid-for service. The garden waste service costs £85 for a 12 month subscription. Membership begins when the brown bin arrives. The application takes the £85 for the current year and sets up a direct debit for later years. An invoice and the updated terms go out at least 10 working days before the direct debit is taken. Payments are collected on or around the 1st of the month at renewal. No other form of payment is accepted. The bin is a 240 litre wheeled brown bin, collected every two weeks, and not necessarily at the same time as rubbish or recycling. A small number of properties are not suitable because of access. The bin is collected from the front, on the path next to the highway the vehicle uses. Cancelling the direct debit ends the subscription and collections stop.
For a missed food collection, check the postcode lookup first. The food page says you need to tell the council on the collection day or by close of business the next working day. The online form is open from 8pm on the day of collection until 5pm the next working day. The outside container should have been out by 7am, or by 6am where that earlier time is already required. The household waste section has its own missed-collection form. That page is not used for a deadline here. Report a missed food collection from 8pm on collection day until 5pm the next working day.
Rubbish goes out by 7am. In twin bin areas the right bin has to be on the pavement or within 1 metre of the boundary, and not blocked. Bags must not be tied or hung on railings. The short what-you-can-put page names food waste, cat litter, coat hangers, polystyrene, dog waste and nappies, and says garden waste and builders rubble are not suitable.
The don't page adds gas bottles, vehicle parts, bricks or rubble, soil or large branches, hot ashes, commercial waste, batteries, low energy bulbs, paint, syringes, needles and electrical items. A bin that contains those may not be collected. That list is the reject list for rubbish. It is not guessed from other councils.
Green bin recycling must be clean, dry and loose. Pink sack users present sacks on the pavement at 7am and can collect more from Muriel Matters House. If the pink sacks run out, black bags are out, but another plastic sack that can be identified as recycling can be used. Black plant pots go in the rubbish. Batteries and small electricals go in a carrier bag on top of the green or black bin, not inside it.
Glass lids come off bottles and jars. Plastic bottle lids go back on. Shredded paper goes in a clear bag. The recycling page does not state how often the green bin or pink sack is collected.
Garden material has to be loose. Weeds are accepted except Japanese knotweed. Branches have to be under 100mm/4inches. Soil, kitchen waste, paper, card, animal waste, clothing, stones and plastics are refused. The council suggests home composting first, and garden waste can also go to the household recycling site.
Applying for the garden bin needs a My Hastings account. Delivery times vary with demand and the time of year. You are told, once the application is approved, when the bin should arrive.
