Hyndburn bin collection days

Hyndburn collects rubbish and recycling on alternate weeks, so each of those bins is fortnightly, and the round as a whole is weekly. Food caddies are weekly from 1 April 2026. The green garden bin is a paid fortnightly service with no collections in December, January or February. Bins go out by 7.30am.

Food waste and the national recycling rules

Hyndburn collects food waste every week. Collections of the outdoor caddy started on 1 April 2026, every week, on the same weekday as the other bins. Homes get a 7 litre kitchen caddy, a 23 litre outdoor caddy and a roll of recycled-plastic liners. The food page also calls both caddies light grey. Flats get the kitchen caddy, and the page says kerbside arrangements for those buildings will be explained later. Tie a liner to the outdoor caddy when you need another roll.

Garden waste

Garden waste is a paid-for service. £35 per bin for 2026/27, from 1 August to 31 July. There is no part-year discount and no concession. A purple sticker already issued for 2025/26 is valid until 31 July 2026. Re-subscribe from 1 June, and no later than 18 July if you want the collections to continue. Stickers are posted about once a week, and it may be up to 10 working days before one arrives. Fortnightly outside winter. There are no garden collections in December, January or February. Put the bin out by 7.30am, or after 6.00pm the evening before. Crews are told not to empty a green bin without a current sticker. The terms say the council does not return for a missed green bin.

If your bin was missed

The garden terms say the council does not return for a missed green bin. Contaminated bins are left for you to sort before the next collection, and a bin that is too heavy is left until you remove some of the waste. The rubbish, food and hints pages do not give a missed-bin form or say that crews come back for the black or grey bin. The garden terms do not give a number of days to report a miss, because they say the council does not return.

Good to know in Hyndburn

  • The rubbish hub says waste is collected weekly, alternating between recycling and non-recycling. The food page names the general bin as black and also talks about the grey bin, and the garden questions call the refuse bin grey. This page uses both names because the council does.
  • The hints page, dated 26 July 2016, still says to double wrap cooked food before it goes in the wheeled bin. The food page is newer and says food in the grey bin may breach section 46. Follow the food page for food.
  • Recycling materials named on the hints page are glass jars and bottles, food and drink cans, aerosols, clean tin foil, newspapers, magazines, plastic bottles, cardboard and textiles. Fully recycling that list is how the page says you can cut household waste by over 70%. It does not say which container takes textiles. A downloadable residents' guide is linked from the hub and is not quoted here.
  • Food goes to anaerobic digestion at Farington Waste Recovery Park in Leyland. The page says food waste is about 33% of a household's general waste, and that it is about 70% water. Methane from food in landfill is described as 25 times more potent than carbon dioxide. The kitchen caddy is 23cm high, 26cm wide and 23cm deep. The outdoor caddy is 40cm high, 30cm wide and 40cm deep.
  • Put bins at the collection point by 7.30am. On estates that is the rear of the footpath in front of the property, not on your own property. Terraces with a usable back street present the bin in the gateway, handles outward. Do not put the bin out before 6.00pm the evening before. Customer services are on 01254 388 111. Assisted collections use the same number, or enquiries@hyndburnbc.gov.uk.
  • The garden terms still describe the collection period as 2025/2026. The subscription page and the questions page both price 2026/27 at £35 per bin from 1 August to 31 July. There is a 14 day cooling-off period from payment, in writing, by email, or on 01254 388 111. After that the charge is not refunded. The bin stays at the property if you move. A gardener should take the waste away as commercial waste.
  • Real Christmas trees are still collected on the first recycling collection in January, after the 12th night, with no lights, tinsel or metal base, whether or not you subscribe. If you do not subscribe, the questions page says you can compost, use a county household waste centre, or put garden waste in the grey bin. The only centre it names is Whinney Hill.
  • The council says it will not cold-call to sell a garden subscription. Buy it on the website or through customer services. Lines for people who cannot go online are Monday to Friday 9.00am to 5.00pm, and Wednesdays from 10.00am.

Bin questions in Hyndburn

How often does Hyndburn empty the bins?

Rubbish and recycling alternate, so each is fortnightly and something is collected every week. The food caddy is every week from 1 April 2026. The green bin is fortnightly if you have paid, except December, January and February.

What does the Hyndburn green bin cost?

£35 per bin for 1 August to 31 July. No part-year price. Re-subscribe by 18 July to keep a 2026/27 round. The sticker can take up to 10 working days. Without it the bin is left.

Will Hyndburn come back for a missed bin?

Not for the green bin. The terms say the council does not return for missed garden collections, and there is no refund if a green bin is not emptied. The other pages we read do not give a missed-bin deadline for the grey, black or recycling bin.
