Luton bin collection days

Luton gives every house a separate bin or box for each material and runs them on two beats. Food waste is picked up weekly from the blue caddy, while the black rubbish bin, the green recycling bin and the black glass box all come every two weeks. Garden waste is a paid seasonal service in a brown bin, collected on the same fortnight as the rubbish. Flats have communal bins and their own rules.

Food waste and the national recycling rules

Luton collects food waste every week. Luton collects food waste every week from houses in a blue caddy. Food recycling for flats and other communal properties was due to follow in the months after the March 2026 national rules, and the council says it will publish details when they are confirmed. The council says plastic film collections become a national requirement from 31 March 2027.

Garden waste

Garden waste is a paid-for service. As of 3 October 2026 a seasonal garden waste subscription costs £50 for each bin, with no concessions and no reduction for joining late. A subscription does not include a bin: if you do not have a brown bin you pay an extra £24.50 for each bin you need. Subscriptions for the 2026 season have closed, and sign-up for the 2027 season opens on 7 December 2026 at 9am. The 2026 season began on 3 February 2026 and ends on 4 December 2026. Collections are every two weeks, on the same day and week as your black bin collection. Subscriptions do not renew automatically.

If your bin was missed

Report a missed collection on the council's website, but wait until after 5pm on the collection day because the crew may still be coming back. The council lists the usual reasons a bin is left: it was not your collection day, it was not out by 6am, it was not at the front of the property on the pavement, it was overloaded, or it held the wrong items. Contaminated bins are tagged and the council tells you why. If you disagree with its decision you can dispute it online. In dangerous weather collections may be suspended and caught up later. Wait until after 5pm on the day of collection before reporting.

Your nearest tip

Good to know in Luton

  • Leave bins at the front of your property, on the pavement, by 6am on collection day, unless the council has asked you to use another spot. A bin that is too heavy will not be emptied.
  • Houses put food in the blue bin, recycling in the green bin, garden waste in the brown bin, glass bottles and jars in the black box and rubbish in the black bin. Flats use red or green bins or clear sacks for recycling, black communal or wheeled bins for rubbish and a black communal box, large purple bin or labelled glass bin for glass.
  • The council's pages disagree about flats and rubbish. The main collections page says flats get a weekly rubbish collection, while the types-of-bins and simpler recycling pages say two weeks, so check the council's collection day service for a flat.
  • Recycling goes into the green bin loose, never in plastic bags. The council's rule is wash, squash and recycle, and if in doubt leave it out. Plastic lids can stay on bottles and tubs.
  • Glass is a separate box because only bottles and jars are accepted. Drinking glasses, mirrors, windows, Pyrex, light bulbs and plant pots are rejected and can leave the whole box uncollected.
  • Bulky waste is booked online: the first three items cost a minimum of £36.15 and each extra item up to ten costs £7.07, with half price if the head of household is on a means-tested benefit. Items must be at pavement level and not more than 5 metres from where the vehicle can stop.
  • Tidy Tips are for Luton residents with small amounts of household waste, and you are asked to bring proof of residency and identification. As of 3 October 2026 the pages read gave no dated Christmas collection timetable.
  • The council's missed bin collections page says a garden waste bin (the brown bin) may not be collected because it contains non-garden waste, and asks you to remove anything that is not garden waste so it can be emptied on the next scheduled collection.
