Milton Keynes bin collection days

Milton Keynes gives street-level homes four wheelie bins by colour: red lid for paper and card, blue lid for plastic, metal and glass, a black bin for what cannot be recycled, and a green bin for food and garden waste. The two recycling bins go out on alternate weeks, while the green bin is weekly.

Food waste and the national recycling rules

Milton Keynes collects food waste every week. Food waste and garden waste share the green wheelie bin, or a 23l green caddy for homes with small or no gardens, and the council says both are collected every week.

Garden waste

Garden waste arrangements vary across the area. The first green bin is free. For 2026/27 each second or third green bin costs £55 a year, with up to two extra bins per property. The paid subscription year runs from 1 April 2026 to 31 March 2027, and green bins are collected weekly.

If your bin was missed

Use the council's online missed collection form or call Customer Services on 01908 252570. Check first that your waste was at the boundary by 7.00am and that the recycling had no wrong items in it. You have a 48 hour window to report. Once you report, the council returns within two working days, so leave the bin somewhere accessible. Black bin waste goes on a different vehicle to the red and blue recycling, so the crews may call at different times.

Good to know in Milton Keynes

  • Three different vehicles do the round. One empties the black bin, one takes red or blue recycling depending on the week, and a third empties the green bin or caddy, so your containers can be emptied at different times on the same day.
  • Put bins or sacks on the boundary of your property by 7.00am on collection day and not before 5.00pm the day before. Break down cardboard, and rinse food and drink containers before they go in the blue bin or sack.
  • Wheelie bin households must not put loose items or extra sacks out. Bins with the wrong items inside may be left. Homes allocated sacks should tie all rubbish and recycling bags.
  • Bank holiday collections take place as usual, but the council revises dates over Christmas and New Year. It publishes a 2026/27 waste and recycling calendar on its collection days page.
  • Homes with a small garden or none can ask for a 23l green caddy with a lock-down lid instead of the large green bin. Compostable items are accepted only if they display the EN13432 standard or the Seedling logo.
  • The council's newer mobile app shows collection days and lets you search what can be recycled.
