Rotherham bin collection days

Rotherham sorts household waste by bin colour: pink lid for general waste and food waste together, green for paper and card, black for glass, cans and plastics, and brown for garden waste on a subscription. The council's pages describe each bin in detail but send you to its Bins App for the dates.

Food waste and the national recycling rules

Rotherham has a transitional arrangement for weekly food waste. Rotherham is listed in the schedule to the Environment Act 2021 (Commencement No. 9 and Transitional Provisions) Regulations 2024 with a food waste collection date years away. Meanwhile the council's pages say food waste goes in the pink lid bin with general waste.

Garden waste

Garden waste is a paid-for service. The brown bin service runs all year round, with collections fortnightly for most of the year and dropping to monthly over the winter. Permits are valuable, so the council advises storing the bin securely.

If your bin was missed

First search your street name in the council's missed bin directory. If it is listed the council already knows and will return, so leave the bin out if it is safe. Otherwise use the online missed bin report. The bin must be out before 7am, at the kerbside without blocking the pavement, not overflowing and with the lid shut. A missed household waste or recycling bin reported after the next working day is not collected until your next scheduled collection.

Good to know in Rotherham

  • Food waste has no separate collection in Rotherham yet. The pink lid bin takes food waste with general waste, nappies, wipes, pet bedding and plastic film, which is why the app and calendar dates matter most for that bin.
  • Cartons are an easy one to get wrong. Drinks cartons and Tetra Pak go in the black bin with glass, cans and plastics, not in the green paper and card bin.
  • Put bins at the kerbside before 7am without blocking the pavement. Common reasons for missed bins are an open lid, side waste or extra bagged waste, the bin not being out in time, wrong material in a recycling bin, or the wrong bin being presented.
  • Do not compact the contents of a bin. It makes it hard for the collection vehicles to empty and can damage the bin.
  • The four recycling centres at Greasbrough, Bramley, Rawmarsh and North Anston are open seven days a week, 10am to 6:30pm from 1 April to 30 September and 10am to 4pm from 1 October to 31 March. They close on 25 and 26 December and 1 January.
  • Brown garden bins run all year, fortnightly for most of the year and monthly over the winter. The council says the permits are valuable, so keep the bin secure.
