Spelthorne bin collection days

Spelthorne uses a dark green bin for rubbish and a light green bin for recycling, each every two weeks, plus a weekly green food caddy. Textiles and small electricals go out the same week as the food, in bags beside the bins. Garden waste is a paid fortnightly bin with a Christmas break, composted at Trumps Farm in Chertsey. Drinks cartons are not taken in the kerbside bin.

Food waste and the national recycling rules

Spelthorne collects food waste every week. Food waste is collected weekly with textiles in tied bags and small electricals in carrier bags, which the council calls 3 services in 1. Put the green caddy out by 6am and allow until 2pm. Line the grey kitchen caddy with a bread, fruit or vegetable bag, or fully wrapped newspaper, and tie it. Loose food waste is not taken. Some high-rise flats have no food service because there is no space for bins.

Garden waste

Garden waste is a paid-for service. For April 2026 to March 2027 the annual charge is £80. The garden waste bin is a one-off £35. An extra bin is £35 and its service charge is £45 a bin, with a limit of three bins. A green waste sack is £55 a year. You can share a subscription with a neighbour. If you cannot use the form, call 01784 451499 and choose option 3 then option 7. Collections run every two weeks from April to March, with a break between Christmas and the end of January. Bins for the new service could be ordered from 1 March 2026. Renewing a lapsed subscription takes 10 days before the next collection.

If your bin was missed

Complete the online form, or contact Customer Services. The council will return only if the bin was kerbside by 6am and held the right items. Otherwise wait for the next collection or take the waste to the Community Recycling Centre at Charlton Lane, Shepperton. Food waste must also have been bagged. Report a missed rubbish, recycling or food collection within one working day.

Good to know in Spelthorne

  • Recycling must be loose. If you have too much, a bag of extra recycling beside the bin is emptied and the bag itself is put back in the recycling bin for you to throw away with the rubbish. Dry cardboard can sit beside the bin unless it is raining. A second recycling bin is available if it overflows often.
  • Free reusable recycling bags, for carrying loose items out to the bin, can be collected from the council offices at Knowle Green in Staines-upon-Thames, the Fordbridge Centre in Ashford, the Greeno Centre in Shepperton, and Staines Community Centre.
  • Drinks cartons are a no at the kerb because of their waxy surface. The council says they can go to Charlton Lane or some recycling banks. A wrong item can get the whole lorry load rejected, and the crew leaves a sticker.
  • The food page says about 40% of household waste is food. It is turned into compost or soil improver. Tie the liner: loose food is refused.
  • Garden waste for April 2026 to March 2027 is £80, with the bin itself £35. There is a break from Christmas to the end of January. If you move within the borough, tell Customer Services so the subscription can move with you.
  • High-rise flats may be outside the recycling or food service where there is no room for bins. Label individual bins with the house name or number.
