Stockport bin collection days

Stockport uses four colours: a black bin for rubbish, a blue bin or bag for paper and card, a brown bin or black box for glass, cans and plastics, and a green bin that takes food waste and, with a paid permit, garden waste. Its pages do not say how often the black bin is collected, so this page does not state a rubbish frequency.

Garden waste

Garden waste is a paid-for service. The yearly garden waste permit costs £59 per green bin, based on a full year from 1 April 2026 to 31 March 2027, and the price does not reduce through the year. If you receive Council Tax Support the permit is £39 for one bin, and any additional permit is £59. There is no limit on the number of permits and bins a property can have. The service is a yearly one running from April to March. All permits expire on 31 March 2027, and you can buy one at any time, though the council says it is best to buy before 1 April to get a full year.

If your bin was missed

Check your bin calendar to make sure the bin was due, then use the council's online report form. The council recommends waiting until after 6pm on your collection day so crews can finish their rounds. If your street is listed as a missed street, leave your bins out and the crews will return. You must wait until after 6pm on your collection day. Blue, black or brown bin misses can be reported up to 3 days after your collection day, but green bin misses must be reported by 2pm the following day. The council lists reasons a bin may not be emptied, including a lid not fully closed, heavy items such as rubble, and a bin not out before 6:30am.

Your nearest tip

Good to know in Stockport

  • Stockport's recycling is split by material. Paper, card and cartons go in the blue bin or bag, and glass, tins, cans, aerosols, foil and plastic bottles, pots, tubs and trays go in the brown bin or black box. All containers should be empty and clean.
  • The black bin takes some things that many councils ask people to recycle: polystyrene, plastic carrier bags and Tupperware. Plastic film, crisp packets and lids from bottles and jars also go in the black bin, because the council says they cannot be recycled.
  • As of 3 October 2026 the council said printed calendars only show dates up to now, your collection days have not changed, and new printed calendars would be delivered to all households before fortnightly blue bin collections begin in December. Check future dates and download an updated calendar on the council's collection day page.
  • Leave bins out before 6:30am on collection day, at the front edge of your property or nominated collection point, with the lid fully closed. Help putting bins out is available if nobody in the household can manage it, and Stockport Homes tenants in new properties should contact Stockport Homes.
  • Food waste can go straight into the green bin or a food waste caddy. Use compostable liners marked EN13432, not biodegradable plastic bags from supermarkets. The council said a roll of liners could be collected free from any Stockport Library, and most supermarkets stock them.
  • A real Christmas tree can go in the green bin if you have a garden waste permit, cut up small enough for the lid to close. Soil is not accepted at the composting plant that treats the garden and food waste, so take it to a tip.
  • Stockport's content is published under the Open Government Licence, and the council points to Recycle for Greater Manchester for items not on its lists. Three household waste recycling centres accept home waste, including DIY projects, free of charge.
