Tameside's bin colours are not the ones most councils use: green is the bin for general waste, black takes recycling such as bottles, cans and glass, blue is for paper and card, and brown takes garden waste along with food. The council has stopped posting calendars and sends residents to its bin app or online checker for their days.

Food waste and the national recycling rules
Tameside does not collect food waste every week. The council's what-to-put-in-each-bin page lists uncooked and cooked food in the brown bin alongside garden waste. The pages read on 3 October 2026 did not describe a separate weekly food waste collection or give its start date.
Report a missed bin on the council's online form or in its bin app, once you have checked the bin was put out by 7am and is not contaminated. A bin put out late is emptied the next time that bin is due, and a contaminated bin has to be cleared and presented again at its next collection. The council gives no reporting deadline on the page read. It says it does not have the capacity to return and empty a bin that was only partly emptied, because waste was stuck or compacted.
On collection day the council asks for bins to be put out at the edge of your property, or at your nominated collection point, by 7am, and returned to your property after emptying. A bin that is put out late waits until the next time that bin is due.
The council says it cannot recycle plastic bags, so they belong in the green general waste bin. Since 14 October 2024 pots, tubs and trays can go in the black recycling bin as well as plastic bottles. It points residents to the Greater Manchester Recycling A to Z for a fuller list.
Side waste, meaning extra bags left next to the general waste bin, is not collected. If the lid is ajar because a wheeled bin is overfull, crews empty it and put the excess back in the bin. Extra recycling can be left beside the recycling bins if it is identifiable in a clear bag.
Households that need more general waste capacity can ask under the council's exceptional circumstances policy. Replacement bins are charged for, and the charges are non-refundable.
Operational problems such as vehicle breakdowns and blocked roads can mean some rounds are not emptied on the usual day. The council posts daily updates on Twitter as @tmbc_waste and @TamesideCouncil.
The council puts a cost on mixed rubbish: it says every tonne of general waste costs £135 of taxpayers' money. For waste queries its Waste Services team is at Tame Street Depot, Stalybridge, SK15 1ST, on 0161 342 8355.
