Warrington collects its black, blue and green bins every two weeks and adds a food waste caddy that is emptied every week, on the same day as your black bin. Blue is the recycling bin, black is for rubbish and the green garden waste bin needs a paid subscription. The blue bin does not take plastic bags, crisp packets or other soft plastics.

Food waste and the national recycling rules
Warrington collects food waste every week. The council collects food waste every week, on the same day of the week as your black bin, while the black, blue and green bins are collected every two weeks. The caddies and liners are free. Flats are sent a caddy and use small wheeled food bins in communal bin areas.
Garden waste is a paid-for service. The 2026 subscription costs £43.50 online or £47.50 by phone or in person. A new or extra green bin costs £35 each for admin and delivery, and you need a subscription for each bin. The council sends a permit that you attach under the handles at the back of the bin. Collections run every two weeks from 3 March 2026 to 4 December 2026. If you do not subscribe, the council cannot empty your green bin. You can share a green bin with a neighbour.
Check first that it was your collection day, the bin was out before 6.30am in the right place, had no wrong items, was not too heavy, had its lid shut and had no extra bags beside it. Do not report before 6pm on your collection day, even if the crew usually comes earlier. If a black bin was accidentally missed, the council cannot return but will take three extra bags on the next black bin day if you tell it. A missed blue bin is not recollected, and a missed green bin is recollected for subscribers.
Put your bin out by 6.30am on collection day, but not before 5pm the day before. Terraced houses leave the bin at the end of the alley or the usual collection point. Return the bin as soon as you can after it is emptied, and no later than midnight.
Leave glass, plastic bottles, cans, paper and cardboard loose in the blue bin, never in plastic bags. A bin with wrong items gets a red advice sticker and is emptied on the next collection day once you take the items out.
The blue bin does not take soft plastics. Plastic bags, pet food pouches, crisp packets and wrappers cannot be sorted at the council's sorting site and can jam the machinery, so the council points to in-store recycling at supermarkets.
The council's black bin page still lists leftover food as something you can put in the black bin, while its food waste page asks you to use the caddy. Use the caddy for food and keep the black bin for what cannot be recycled.
When your caddy liners run low, tie the yellow tag from the roll, or a liner, to the handle of the outdoor caddy and the crew leaves a new roll on top. No packaging, even compostable, may go in the caddy.
A lost or damaged bin must be replaced at your own cost, which is a £35 charge for admin and delivery. Number your bins with your house number to help them find their way back.
The Gatewarth centre has one-way traffic, a 5mph limit and no access on foot. Rubble, bricks, plasterboard, kitchen units, doors and similar items are not treated as household waste, so need a free permit and have limits. Vehicles over 3.5 tonnes are not allowed.
