Wealden collects rubbish and recycling on alternate weeks, on the same day of the week, with food waste every week and optional garden waste on its own schedule. The green recycling bin takes glass, paper, card, cans, plastics and even plastic film. Rubbish goes in the black bin, with the lid closed. Wealden is a district council in East Sussex, so household waste recycling sites are run by the county and need a booking.

Food waste and the national recycling rules
Wealden collects food waste every week. Wealden's weekly food waste service is new and follows the Simpler Recycling rules, which the council says require weekly food waste collections from every household from March 2026, with a separate vehicle that may come on a different day from your rubbish and recycling. After its first 12 weeks the council reported over 1,200 tonnes collected. Food must be in compostable liners, and only the orange-topped container goes out.
Garden waste is a paid-for service. For the 2026/27 subscription year the council charges a single annual fee of £66 per bin, paid in full by debit or credit card, for up to four bins in a choice of 140 litres or 240 litres. People joining part way through pay a quarterly pro-rata charge, and a delivery charge applies if a bin was removed for a lapsed subscription and you re-subscribe within 12 months. The subscription year runs from 1 August to 31 July, with fortnightly collections except for a two-week break over Christmas and New Year. Each bin carries a licence sticker, and a bin without one is not emptied and may be removed.
Put bins at the edge of your property by 7am. Report a missed collection online or by calling 01323 443322. Extra rubbish beside the bin will not be taken, and a bin holding the wrong waste may be left. Report by 5pm on the following working day.
Your collection day for rubbish and recycling is the same day on alternate weeks, but the garden waste bin may be collected on a different day, and so may the food waste container. The bin day search shows each.
Extra recycling can be left beside the bin in white or clear bags, but glass must go in the bin itself. Extra rubbish is not taken.
The weekly food waste container is emptied by a separate vehicle from the rubbish and recycling crews. Do not put the kitchen caddy inside the orange-topped container, because the council cannot replace caddies lost that way.
Home composting and the county's recycling sites are alternatives to the paid garden bin; garden waste cannot go in the rubbish or recycling bin, which would not then be emptied. Visits to the recycling sites need a booking.
Textiles and shoes can go to one of seven recycling bring sites run by the Salvation Army, including those at Tesco in Crowborough, Hailsham and Uckfield. Items must not be left beside full bins.
Assisted collections are for people who cannot put bins out because of age, infirmity or disability and have no one else at home to help. Long drives or being away from home do not qualify.
