Woking bin collection days

Woking's bin pages say Joint Waste Solutions manage and collect the bins. For a house, the rubbish bin is emptied on alternate weeks to the recycling bin. Both go out by 6.00am with the lid closed, and extra rubbish is not taken. Food is weekly. Garden waste is a fortnightly subscription, and the garden page does not state the price.

Food waste and the national recycling rules

Woking collects food waste every week. Houses have a weekly food collection. A small silver kitchen caddy is emptied into a larger green outdoor bin with a lockable lid. The outdoor bin goes out by 6.00am and may be collected at a different time from rubbish or recycling. Liners can be plastic bags, newspaper or compostable liners. Black bags are refused. Food goes to an anaerobic digestion facility. Flats may be on a different service. Compost bins are sold by the Surrey Environment Partnership from £13.

Garden waste

Garden waste is a paid-for service. Garden waste is a fortnightly subscription. The garden page does not state the price. It says not to put garden waste in the rubbish bin. Accepted branches are up to 3 inches or 7.5 cm thick. Soil, stones, rubble, food, pet litter, wood and sawdust stay out. Garden waste can also go to a community recycling centre. The page points people who want to compost at home to the Surrey Environment Partnership.

If your bin was missed

Woking's own page sends you to Joint Waste Solutions to report a missed rubbish, recycling, garden, food, bulky, small electricals, textiles, clinical or sharps collection. Joint Waste Solutions says you can report a missed recycling, rubbish, food, garden, textiles or small electricals collection up to two working days after the collection day. For example, a Monday collection can be reported up to the end of Wednesday. After that you wait for the next collection. A bin that was not put out, was too heavy, or had the wrong items in it cannot be reported as missed. Report a missed collection up to two working days after the collection day.

Good to know in Woking

  • The rubbish yes list is food pouches, nappies, plastic bags and film, hard plastics and polystyrene. Recycling, aerosols, cartons, food waste, garden waste, textiles, electricals, batteries, sharps and hazardous clinical waste are collected separately. Paint, chemicals, energy saving bulbs, gas canisters, bricks, rubble, soil and business waste are not collected from home. Surrey County Council's community recycling centres are on 03456 009 009.
  • The recycling lists used here are the ones Joint Waste Solutions publishes for Elmbridge, Mole Valley and Woking, not the Surrey Heath list on the same page. Items should be clean, dry and loose. Extra plastic, metal or glass can go beside the bin in a clear bag. Extra cardboard can be a dry folded tied bundle or a clear bag. Black or coloured sacks are not taken. An additional recycling bin can be ordered.
  • Woking recycling takes cartons, aerosols, paper, cardboard, plastic bottles, pots, tubs, trays and squeezy tubes, tins, cans, glass bottles and jars, foil and non-black plant pots. Food pouches, nappies, plastic film, hard plastics and polystyrene stay out. That film rule is the Woking section. It is not the Surrey Heath rule, which accepts some stretchable film.
  • The outdoor food bin is green and locks. The kitchen caddy is silver. Liners can be shopping bags, bread bags, salad bags, newspaper or compostable liners. Black bags and other food packaging stay out. Liquids, including yoghurt, oil and fat, stay out. Flats may differ.
  • Garden branches are limited to 3 inches or 7.5 cm thick. Do not put garden waste in the rubbish bin. The subscription price is not on the garden page.
  • A missed collection can be reported for up to two working days. If a problem was already recorded, such as the bin not being out, you correct it and wait for the next round. Bins go out by 6.00am on the property boundary.
