Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon bin collection days
Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon (ABC Council) runs a three-bin system: a black bin for residual waste, a green bin that takes glass, paper, card, plastics, cans, cartons, textiles and small electricals all mixed together, and a brown bin for food and garden waste with a kitchen caddy. Only one bin of each colour is emptied per household. Bins go to the kerb by 7am with lids closed, nothing beside them and no ropes or straps.

Garden waste
Garden waste is collected free of charge. The brown bin takes garden waste and food together with no subscription. Only one organic bin is collected per property, so extra garden waste goes to a recycling centre. Households buy their own bins: a 240 litre bin costs £28.20 to collect from a depot or £35.10 delivered. Collected all year on the schedule shown for your address. Free compostable caddy liners are available at the recycling centres.
First rule out the usual reasons: the bin was not out by 7am, the lid was open, there was side waste, ropes or straps were attached, or the green or brown bin held contamination. If none apply, report it through the online form linked from the Find your bin day page, or ring the council on 0300 0300 900. No deadline is published; report as soon as you notice, after checking the bin was presented correctly by 7am.
Good to know in Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon
ABC's green bin is one of the widest mixed collections in Northern Ireland: glass bottles and jars go in with paper, card, plastic bottles, pots, tubs, trays, tins, foil, aerosols and waxed cartons, and even textiles and small electricals (batteries removed). Plastic bags, wrap, polystyrene and batteries are the main things to keep out, because contamination can condemn a whole lorry load.
The brown bin takes all food including meat and bones, cold ashes, torn-up pizza boxes, wet or shredded paper, napkins and tissues as well as garden waste, but no soil, gravel, stones, plant pots or plastic bags. One free roll of compostable liners per visit can be picked up at any recycling centre, or line the caddy with newspaper.
Residents buy their own bins (new-build buyers and homeowners included; tenants may get them from the landlord). A 140 litre bin is £25.80, a 240 litre bin £28.20 and a 360 litre bin £49 collected from a depot, with a £6.90 delivery charge covering up to a set of three bins to one address. Order on 0330 056 1020; only one of each type can be ordered.
Extra capacity needs an application: a household of seven or more can apply for a larger residual bin, five or more for a larger recycling bin, and medical conditions supported by a health professional's signature earn a loaned second 240lt bin for two years. Approved large families pay the difference to upgrade to a 360lt bin (£20.80 when the old bin is handed back) and must display the council's sticker or the bin is not emptied.
A free assisted lift is available where nobody at the address can move the bin: the form must be signed or stamped by a healthcare professional and assessment can take up to four weeks.
Bulky collections are chargeable: £15.30 for 1 lift of up to 3 items, or £30.60 for 2 lifts of up to 6 items, with a maximum of 2 lifts a year, booked on 0330 056 1020. Suites and kitchens are charged per piece, items must weigh under 50kg, and everything goes at the normal bin collection point by 7am on the day. Oil tanks are accepted only cut into at least 4 cleaned pieces; gas cylinders, boilers, tyres, mirrors, panes of glass and DIY waste are refused. Anything the crew will not lift can usually go free to a recycling centre.
The borough has nine recycling centres. New Line (Lurgan), Fairgreen (Portadown), Banbridge, Dromore, Rathfriland and Armagh open six days a week with one or two late evenings to 7.30pm in summer; Keady, Markethill and Tandragee are smaller sites closed on Mondays. Sort everything before you arrive, wear closed shoes, keep children in the car, and note that wheelie bins themselves cannot be brought in. High and medium VOC paint is accepted at most sites but low VOC and trade paint, plasterboard, asbestos, gas cylinders, fire extinguishers, chemicals and tyres are not.
The July 2026 public holidays moved collections to the Saturday before and recycling centres closed on each holiday, while the August bank holiday ran as normal; the holiday collections page lists each year's changes.
