Fermanagh and Omagh bin collection days

Fermanagh and Omagh households have a black (or older green) landfill bin, a blue recycling bin that takes paper, card, cans, cartons, plastics and glass together, and one of two food services depending on where you live: a brown wheelie bin for garden and food waste in the towns, or a 23 litre brown caddy collected by a small POD lorry in rural areas. Food waste must never go in the landfill bin. Bins go out by 7am on collection day with any ropes or bungee cords removed.

Garden waste

Garden waste arrangements vary across the area. There is no garden waste subscription, but the brown wheelie bin is only provided in areas that had the service before April 2017, mainly the towns. Rural households get a 23 litre food caddy instead and cannot swap it for a brown bin because different vehicles collect each. A new 240 Litre brown bin costs £29.00 (replacement £26.00) and is only collected where the brown bin service runs; a 330 Litre home composting bin costs £20.00. Brown bins are collected every two weeks all year with the food waste. Garden waste can also be taken to the recycling centres.

If your bin was missed

The council is changing its refuse rounds and asks you to leave an uncollected bin out: crews will come back as soon as they can. Missed food caddy routes are listed on the council website with the next scheduled fortnightly date. For anything else, ring the Waste and Recycling team on 0300 303 1777 and ask for the Killyvilly (Enniskillen) or Gortrush (Omagh) depot. No deadline is published. Leave the bin out and check the council's service update pages before phoning.

Good to know in Fermanagh and Omagh

  • Only one landfill bin, one blue bin and one brown bin or caddy is collected per household. Larger households or those with a medical condition can apply for an additional bin collection, an assisted lift or a 360L blue recycling bin under the council's policy; approval is needed first through the Killyvilly or Gortrush depot on 0300 303 1777.
  • The blue bin rule is Clean, Dry, Empty and Flat: wash plastics and cans, keep card dry, never nest items inside each other and flatten everything. Nappies, pet waste, bread and crisp bags, small electricals, vapes, batteries, greasy pizza boxes and loose food all count as contamination.
  • Under the Food Waste Regulations (Northern Ireland) all food waste must go in the brown bin or caddy. Staff check landfill bins, leave a reminder sticker the first time food is found and can refuse to empty the bin if it continues. A caddy with the wrong items in it gets a sticker and is left for you to sort before the next collection.
  • Compostable liners are free from outside the Connect Centres at County Buildings, 16 East Bridge Street, Enniskillen and Strule House, 16 High Street, Omagh, from the Gortrush and Killyvilly depots and from every recycling centre. Bought liners must be certified EN13432 compostable. Newspaper or loose food is fine; plastic bags are not and the bin is left.
  • You cannot swap a caddy for a brown bin or the other way round: refuse lorries lift brown bins in the towns and POD vehicles lift caddies in the countryside, and each has its own lifting gear. If a caddy is too small for your household, contact the Recycling Officer on 0300 303 1777, textphone 028 8225 6216, or recycling@fermanaghomagh.com.
  • Bins are bought from the council: a new 240 Litre black, blue or brown bin is £29.00, a like-for-like replacement with the old bin returned is £26.00, and delivery adds £12.50. The 23 litre and kitchen caddies are free, and replacement wheels and axles are sold separately. The council no longer issues green bins.
  • Bulky collections are free: up to three items per collection and three collections per household per year, booked on 0300 303 1777 through the Killyvilly or Gortrush depot. A three-piece suite, a bathroom suite, a table and chairs, or a bed and mattress each count as one item. Glass must be removed from doors, windows and furniture; DIY waste, garden waste, gas cylinders, tyres, lawnmowers, trampolines, kitchens, radiators, oil tanks and bags of rubbish are refused. Furniture and paint reuse runs at 7 of its Recycling Centres.
  • Food waste from caddies can be emptied at Belleek, Carrickmore, Dromore, Drummee, Fintona, Gortrush, Irvinestown, Kesh, Kinawley and Lisnaskea recycling centres, vapes go in the small electricals container, and ink cartridges are taken at Carrickmore, Dromore, Fintona and Gortrush. Pre-sort before you arrive and never put recyclables in the landfill skips.
  • Parents can claim a refund on reusable cloth nappies through the council's nappy scheme, and home compost bins are sold through the depots for uncooked peelings.

Bin questions in Fermanagh and Omagh

How often are bins collected in Fermanagh and Omagh?

Brown bins and food caddies are collected every two weeks. The council does not publish a general frequency for the black and blue bins; use the Waste Calendar Look-Up Tool or the Bin-Ovation app for your address.

Can glass go in the blue bin in Fermanagh and Omagh?

Yes. Glass bottles and jars go in the blue bin along with paper, cardboard, tins, cans, aerosols, cartons and plastic bottles, tubs and trays, all Clean, Dry, Empty and Flat.

Why do I have a food caddy instead of a brown bin?

Brown bins stayed with the households that had them before April 2017, mostly in towns. Everyone else gets a 23 litre caddy collected by a POD vehicle, which the council says is the most cost-effective option for rural areas. The two cannot be exchanged.

How much is a new bin in Fermanagh and Omagh?

A new 240 Litre black, blue or brown bin costs £29.00, or £26.00 as a replacement if you hand back the damaged bin. Delivery is an extra £12.50; collection from the Killyvilly or Gortrush depot is free. Food caddies cost nothing.

What do I do if my bin was missed in Fermanagh and Omagh?

Leave it out. The council is introducing new refuse rounds and says it will collect as soon as possible; missed caddy routes are listed online with the next fortnightly date. Otherwise phone 0300 303 1777.

Is bulky waste collection free in Fermanagh and Omagh?

Yes: up to three items per collection and three collections per household each year, booked on 0300 303 1777. A suite, bathroom suite, table and chairs or bed and mattress each count as one item.

Where can I get food caddy liners in Fermanagh and Omagh?

Free from any recycling centre, outside the Connect Centres in Enniskillen and Omagh, and from the Gortrush and Killyvilly depots. Shop-bought liners must be EN13432 certified; newspaper is an acceptable alternative.
