Lisburn and Castlereagh bin collection days

Lisburn & Castlereagh runs two different recycling set-ups. Most homes have wheelie bins: a residual bin, a mixed dry recycling bin and a brown bin that takes food and garden waste together, with a free kitchen caddy. Other streets, served by Bryson Recycling, sort into red or black kerbie boxes (or a three-tier wheelie box) with paper and card, mixed containers and glass kept apart, collected weekly, plus a 23 litre food waste bin. Bins go out by 6.00am and boxes by 7.00am on collection day.

Garden waste

Garden waste is collected free of charge. The standard brown bin, kitchen caddy and compostable caddy liners are supplied free of charge. Collection of multiple brown bins is chargeable, with an annual renewal fee for the extra bin service. The council's pages do not describe a seasonal pause for the brown bin, which also takes food waste all year. Check the collection days page for your week.

If your bin was missed

First check the service updates or disruptions page, where the council and its recycling contractor Bryson post streets they could not reach and the recollection day. If your street is not listed, email recycling@lisburncastlereagh.gov.uk or phone 028 9244 7300. A bin or box with a contamination sticker is not a missed collection: remove the wrong items and put it out on the next scheduled day. The council sets no deadline; check the service updates page first, then phone or email. If an alternative holiday collection is missed, leave the bin at the collection point until it is emptied.

Your nearest tip

Good to know in Lisburn and Castlereagh

  • Kerbie boxes must be sorted or they are left: one box for cardboard and paper, one for aerosols, cartons, tins, cans, foil and plastic containers, and one for glass. If you only have one or two boxes, alternate the materials week by week, or order extra boxes. Box colour (red or black) does not matter. Overflow recycling can go in tied bags of a single material, but never glass. Shredded paper is listed as accepted in the box but the council also says it cannot take shredded paper, batteries or hand tools at the kerb, so put shredded paper in the brown bin instead.
  • Textiles are being collected again on box rounds: clothes, paired shoes, sheets, duvet covers and pillowcases, clean and dry, tied in a bag next to the kerbie boxes. Curtains, towels, duvets and pillows are not taken.
  • The brown bin is unusual in taking cooked food, bones, food-soiled card, paper plates, cat litter and cold ashes as well as garden waste. Caddy liners are free: tie an empty liner or a red tag to the brown bin handle on collection day and the crew leaves a new roll. If you have a brown bin but no caddy yet, food can go straight in or wrapped in newspaper.
  • Weeds are fine in the brown bin but Japanese knotweed and giant hogweed must not go in any bin, to a recycling centre or be fly-tipped; the council links to separate guidance on controlling them.
  • Larger or additional residual bins are available for households with lots of nappies or medical waste or six or more occupants, through an online application. An assisted collection can be requested where nobody in the home can move the bins or boxes.
  • Bulky collections are free: up to 3 items at a time and up to 3 free-of-charge collections per household per year, then each further collection costs £10, paid in advance. Mattresses and upholstered furniture must be kept dry, fridges emptied and cleaned, carpets rolled and tied. Televisions, glass, tyres, car batteries, garden waste, sheds, oil tanks, doors, worktops and anything two people cannot lift safely are refused.
  • The three recycling centres at Carryduff, Drumlough and The Cutts are for Lisburn and Castlereagh residents only. Bring photographic ID with proof of address (or a utility bill as well), sort waste by type before you arrive, and note that general household waste must be bagged while garden waste and recyclables go in loose. Wheelie bins cannot be tipped into skips, pedestrians are not admitted, and children and pets stay in the car. Weekday hours are 10am - 5pm (Thursday to 7pm in summer), Saturday 9am - 5pm, closed Sunday, with last entry 10 minutes before closing.
  • Some materials are site-specific: car tyres only at Carryduff, cooking and engine oil (Max 10L) only at Carryduff and Drumlough, plasterboard only at The Cutts and Carryduff. Domestic heating oil tanks are no longer accepted anywhere, including through the bulky service.
  • Printable Week A to Week D collection calendars for 2026 and 2026/27 are on the collection days page. Bank holiday changes in 2026 were limited: the July holidays moved collections to the Saturday and, for bins, the following weekend, while the May and August Mondays ran as normal.
