Newry, Mourne and Down bin collection days

Newry, Mourne and Down uses three colours of bin. The blue or green bin is for dry recycling, including glass bottles and jars. The brown bin is for food waste, and for garden waste only if room remains. The black bin is for what those bins do not take. The pages do not give a single collection interval. They send each address to a postcode search called the Weekly Bin Collection Schedule.

Garden waste

Garden waste is collected free of charge. Garden waste is not a separate paid collection. If there is space after food waste, small amounts can go in the brown bin. The brown bin page says the mixed food and garden waste is composted at an in-vessel facility.

If your bin was missed

If parked cars, roadworks, a breakdown or bad weather do not explain a missed bin, contact the council and leave the bin at the kerbside. A delay is collected on the next available day, and the council says it will already know if neighbours were missed too. Check that the bin was out before 6am on the right day, that the lid was closed with no side waste, and that the recycling bin had no non-recyclable items. Do not send a second report for the same bin.

Good to know in Newry, Mourne and Down

  • Put the bin out no later than 6am on collection morning, or the night before. Handles face the road, the lid stays closed, and crews will not take loose waste, extra bags or an extra bin.
  • The weekly collections page asks people to stay at least two metres from the crew. Used tissues, gloves and disposable cleaning cloths go in the black bin, bagged, not in a recycling bin.
  • The black bin page says that in future a black bin found to contain food waste may not be collected. Food waste must go in the brown bin.
  • A blue or green bin with the wrong materials will not be emptied. The blue and green page says both bins are for recycling only.
  • Compostable liners are free, one roll per household while stocks last, at household recycling centres, Greenbank Offices, Strangford Road Depot and Downshire Civic Centre. Newspaper can be used instead. Supermarket liners need the seedling logo. Plastic bags are refused.
  • Batteries must not go in the black, brown or blue or green bin. The collection information page says they can go to a household recycling centre, and sometimes to shops or a school collection.
  • If a crew damages a bin, the council replaces it. Wear and tear is the householder's responsibility, and crews may leave a damaged bin because it is unsafe to lift. The council says it has not changed collection schedules, and asks you to tell them if the postcode calendar shows the wrong day.
