Ashfield gives households up to four wheelie bins: a green lid for mixed recycling, a blue lid for glass bottles and jars, a red lid for general waste, and a paid brown or black lid for garden waste. Recycling and rubbish are every other week. Glass is much less often, every 8 weeks. There is no food caddy on the pages checked; a separate food collection is not required until 1 October 2027. Collections run Tuesday to Friday.

Food waste and the national recycling rules
Ashfield has a transitional arrangement for weekly food waste. Ashfield District Council is listed in the schedule to the Environment Act 2021 (Commencement No. 9 and Transitional Provisions) Regulations 2024 with a separate food waste collection date of 1 October 2027. The bin pages read for this entry describe no food caddy. They say food can be composted or put in the red-lidded general waste bin. Glass is kept in its own blue-lidded bin, collected every 8 weeks, which is separate from the green-lidded mixed recycling.
Garden waste is a paid-for service. The first garden bin costs £35 for the season and each extra bin costs £20. The price does not fall if you join part-way through. A brown lid can be requested when you sign up if the property needs one. Collections run from March to December and are fortnightly. Dates appear on the bin calendar only for addresses with a current subscription. You can sign up at any time in the season.
Do not report before the crew's finish time. Bins belong at the edge of the property nearest the road. Extra bags are not taken, and the lid must be closed. A hanger on the bin means the crew recorded a problem rather than a miss. In severe weather, leave the bin out; if it is still not emptied before the next scheduled day, up to 1 bag of side waste is taken then. Team leaders may check vehicle CCTV. Wait until after 4pm. Bins must be out by 6am. Crews work from 6am to 4pm, so a bin can be collected at any time in that window.
Green-lid recycling must be clean, dry, empty and loose. Bagged recycling is not the instruction. Pumps come off bottles; other lids can stay. Shredded paper and pizza boxes go in the red bin. The council's line is: if in doubt, leave it out.
The blue-lid bin is only bottles and jars. Sheet glass, drinking glasses, mirrors and vases are refused. Homes with little glass can share a neighbour's bin, use a supermarket recycling point, or ask for the bin to be taken away.
Red-lid rubbish should be bagged and tied. The page suggests airtight pedal-bin liners. Crisp packets, takeaway containers, toothpaste tubes, plastic bags and pet food pouches are the examples given. Batteries are separate and go to a local collection point.
Garden waste is £35 for the first bin and £20 for each extra one, from March to December. Joining late does not reduce the fee. Food, animal waste, soil, pots, ash, timber and sawdust stay out. A prohibited item means the bin is not emptied. Tips are signposted to Nottinghamshire County Council rather than named on the district page.
Waste rounds are Tuesday to Friday. The simpler recycling page says frequency did not change when days were revised, though some addresses moved day. Check the bin calendar rather than an old reminder. That revision began on Tuesday 7 October 2025.
Fridge and freezer collections were temporarily unavailable from 10 August 2026 because of a national backlog.
As of 3 October 2026 the council had not published a Christmas collection timetable on the pages read.
