East Lothian bin collection days

East Lothian collects recycling and food waste weekly, using boxes, bags and a caddy rather than one mixed wheelie bin. Plastics, metals and cartons go in a white weighted bag, glass in a green or black box, paper and card in a blue box or bag, and batteries in an empty food-caddy liner. The green bin is for what those containers will not take. The brown garden bin is a fortnightly subscription.

Garden waste

Garden waste is a paid-for service. The brown bin is described as a fortnightly garden waste subscription. The what-goes page does not state the price. Only one garden bin is emptied per property, and a missed garden collection has no guaranteed return time.

If your bin was missed

A collection is not missed until after 4pm. Containers should have been out from 7am until 4pm, on the right day, lid closed, not stickered, and not blocked by roadworks or parked cars. Wrong items or a too-heavy bin wait until the next day. Report through myeastlothian, or email wasteservices@eastlothian.gov.uk or call 01875 824 305. Do not leave a container out on Saturday or Sunday; put it out for 7am on Monday. Vehicles have CCTV. Report by the end of the next working day. Non-recyclable waste, recycling, food and assisted collections are aimed to be caught up within two working days. Garden waste has no guaranteed timescale.

Good to know in East Lothian

  • The what-goes page says six material categories go in one vehicle with separate compartments. It names the containers and not long item lists, so this page does not invent which plastics or foods are accepted.
  • Household batteries ride in an empty food caddy liner. Food packaging, other than the council's own liners, does not go in the caddy. Extra containers can be ordered, and only council containers are emptied.
  • The green non-recyclable bin has no frequency on the what-goes page. Only one of those bins is emptied per property, and a too-heavy bin is left.
  • Missed collections are reported through myeastlothian. Assisted collections use the same account and should say where the containers are collected from. Parked cars, roadworks and severe weather mean leave the containers out.
  • A partly emptied bin is loosened and presented next time, not reported as a second collection. Garden waste that is stuck in the bin is treated the same way.
  • The contact if the online report is not possible is wasteservices@eastlothian.gov.uk or 01875 824 305. The missed page was last reviewed on 20 May 2026.
