Herefordshire runs a two-bin service on alternate weeks: recycling in a green bin one week, general rubbish in a black bin the next. Almost everything recyclable shares the one green bin, glass included, so the sorting decisions are fewer than in councils with a box for each material. The big gap is food waste, which the council does not collect separately yet, and a paid brown bin handles garden waste.

Service disruption
Fridges, freezers and cooling appliances are temporarily not accepted at the household recycling centres or on the bulky collection service, because of a national shortage of processing capacity. The council suggests retailer take-back, reuse or repair, or storing the appliance until the suspension is lifted.

Food waste and the national recycling rules
Herefordshire does not collect food waste every week. Herefordshire does not collect food waste separately yet. The council says a weekly service is planned for households that can have a standard kerbside collection from September/October 2027, after Cabinet approved it on 30 July 2026. An earlier start in March 2026 slipped because of the conditions attached to government funding. Before collections begin each eligible home will receive a 7-litre kitchen caddy, a 23-litre outdoor caddy with a lockable lid and a first roll of 52 compostable liners. Flats may be offered an opt-in caddy service or a communal arrangement at a later stage.
Garden waste is a paid-for service. As of 3 October 2026 the garden waste service costs £60 a bin for the year from 30 March 2026 to 31 March 2027. Anyone who signs up from 1 October 2026 pays a reduced £30 per bin to cover the period until 31 March 2027, plus a £10 delivery fee for each bin. A property can have up to 5 subscriptions, and the renewal for 2027/28 is charged at the full price. The brown bin, or a set of reusable sacks where a bin does not suit the property, is emptied every other week all year round apart from a two-week break over Christmas and New Year. Collections run as normal on other bank holidays.
Before reporting, look at whether your neighbours' bins were emptied (the crew may just be running late), whether the bin was out on the right week according to the collection day checker, and whether the crew left a tag or sticker explaining why. Collections can happen at any time from 6.30am. If none of that explains it, report the missed rubbish, recycling or garden waste collection on the council's website. The council cannot take a report while the crew has not yet visited your street or has logged a problem with your collection on its in-cab device. Report it as soon as possible and within 2 working days of the scheduled collection day.
Put bins or sacks out at the boundary of your property nearest to the public highway by 6.30am on collection day, with the lid shut. Anything left next to the bin is not taken.
Homes that cannot take a wheelie bin use black sacks instead, up to 4 on the general rubbish week, bought by the household. The council delivers clear recycling sacks between August and September each year, plus a box for glass.
Do not bag your recycling. The council wants it loose in the green bin, clean and dry, and will tag and leave a bin that holds items it cannot send for sorting.
Since 1 April 2026 aluminium foil, foil trays, metal or foil-lined tubes and plastic tubes such as toothpaste tubes can go in the green bin. Scrunch foil to check it is not plastic, and leave caps on tubes.
Small electrical items, batteries and vapes are not for either bin. The council collects them every week from the top of the bin lid, so put them out loose on top.
Recycling and rubbish are collected as normal on bank holidays except Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day. The collection day checker shows the replacement day. As of 3 October 2026 the council's pages describe this rule but do not give a dated Christmas timetable.
The council no longer sends text reminders. The collection day checker can produce a printable calendar, and it also shows your garden waste day if you subscribe.
On Friday 2 October 2026 the council reported disruption to the garden waste round and asked subscribers to use its postcode look-up to see whether they were affected.
Household recycling centres are for Herefordshire residents only and every visit must be booked online, up to four bookings per fortnight per household or vehicle. A trailer longer than 1.3m or a commercial-type vehicle needs a permit.
