Malvern Hills bin collection days

Malvern Hills alternates a black bin and a green bin, one each week, so each is collected every two weeks. The black bin is general rubbish and, for now, food. The green bin is recycling and goes out by 7am, loose, with the lid shut. Garden waste is a paid brown bin. A separate weekly food service is only just starting as a trial.

Food waste and the national recycling rules

Malvern Hills does not collect food waste every week. A weekly food collection is not running across the district yet. The council will give a 7 litre kitchen caddy, a 23 litre outdoor bin and a roll of liners. A trial round starts on 5 October 2026. If that works, the council expects every home to be covered by October 2027. Until then, food stays in the black bin, and the council asks you to wrap it. The food page does not list which foods the new caddy will take.

Garden waste

Garden waste is a paid-for service. A new customer pays £87.50 for the first bin and £72.50 for each extra bin, in full, up front. Renewal is £82.50 by direct debit or £87.50 by another method, then £72.50 for each extra bin. There is no delivery charge and no refund if you cancel. If you cancel and do not make the bin available for collection, the charge can be £50. Collections are fortnightly in a 240 litre brown bin, for a year from whenever you join. Put it out by 7am. Crews collect between 7am and 5pm. The safe working weight is 100kg, and a heavy bin can be refused. Shake soil off weeds and turf.

If your bin was missed

If the bin was out correctly and was not emptied, use the missed bin form. The bins page does not say how many days you have to report it. If collections are off because of roadworks, snow, ice or flooding, the council posts that on the bins page instead. The bin has to be at the boundary nearest the road or path by 7am, lid closed, with nothing beside it, and it has to be a council bin. Extra recycling can go in a clear sack or another recyclable container next to the green bin. A contaminated bin is emptied on the next collection day after you take the wrong items out.

Good to know in Malvern Hills

  • Most homes have one 180 litre black bin. A larger 240 litre bin is only if you meet the council's criteria, and extra black bins are being taken away. An extra green recycling bin can be requested. Side waste is not taken, except extra recycling in a clear sack, and extra bags at Christmas.
  • The waste and recycling page says the green bin takes plastic bottles and packaging except black plastic, cans, tins, paper, card, and glass bottles and jars. Nappies do not go in it. The recycling page adds clean foil and empty tubes, and says crisp packets and plastic that springs back after you scrunch it go in the black bin. The full green-bin list is also pointed at the Let's Waste Less website, which is not repeated here.
  • Homes on sacks get one roll of black sacks and one roll of cherry recycling sacks each summer. They alternate each week. The maximum is 4 black sacks on the fortnightly rubbish collection, and only one roll of black sacks is issued each year.
  • Garden waste is £87.50 for the first bin if you are new, or if you renew without direct debit. Direct debit renewal is £82.50. Each extra bin is £72.50. Branches over 10cm stay out. Call 01684 862490 between 8am and 4pm, Monday to Friday, for garden or bin questions.
  • Household recycling centres are run by Worcestershire County Council, not the district. The district will not take fridges and freezers on the bulky service until further notice.
  • The food page does not say the caddy is already at every house. It says you will be contacted when the trial reaches you, starting 5 October 2026, and that you need do nothing until then.
