Monmouthshire bin collection days

Monmouthshire has finished rolling reusable red and purple recycling bags out to every household, and it no longer collects recycling in single-use plastic bags. Rubbish is two black bags a fortnight, no larger than 80 litres. Food goes weekly in a blue bin. Glass bottles and jars go fortnightly in a green box, usually with the rubbish. The red and purple pages do not say how often those bags are emptied.

Garden waste

Garden waste is a paid-for service. The 2026 charge is £55 per bin. Registration for 2026 is now closed. The page also says the registration period ends on 31st August 2026. Keeping the price at £55 means there is no extra collection in January 2027. Each bin is collected once a fortnight from 2nd March 2026 to 4th December 2026. Existing customers use last year's bin. Put it out before 7am. The council's number for storage or mobility problems is 01633 644644.

If your bin was missed

Monmouthshire asks for waste and recycling out by 7am. If a red or purple bag was missed, was not stickered, and held only accepted items, report it through My Monmouthshire. A sticker means the crew left it because of the contents, and it waits until you have sorted it for the next round. The red and purple page does not give a clock time for that report.

Good to know in Monmouthshire

  • The red bag is paper, cardboard, junk mail, newspapers, magazines, directories and catalogues. The purple bag is cans, plastic bottles, punnets, rinsed yoghurt pots, margarine tubs, empty aerosols, foil and drink cartons. Rinse containers in the washing-up water.
  • Soft plastics stay out of both bags. If they go in the kerbside service at all, they go in the black bags. Specialist points are listed on Wales Recycles. The red and purple page was last updated on 15th October 2026.
  • Lithium-ion batteries in phones, laptops and vapes are a fire risk in the vehicles and at disposal. They do not go in the recycling bags or the rubbish. Shops that sell vapes should take them back, and recycling centres take batteries, electricals and vapes.
  • Replacement red and purple bags come from a community hub, not from Gilwern Community Hub. They are for kerbside recycling only.
  • Rubbish has been limited to two bags a fortnight since 2013. The rubbish page says the county recycled 72% of household waste in 2023/24. Nappy and hygiene waste can have yellow bags, fortnightly with the rubbish, from a community hub. A household of more than five people can ask for advice. One extra rubbish bag is allowed on the first refuse day after Christmas.
  • Food liners can be the council's bags, or now a small plastic bag such as a bread bag or a frozen-food bag. Free bags, grey caddies and blue bins come from community hubs. Food is sent to anaerobic digestion in Bridgend. Garden waste is composted in Abergavenny, so kitchen food must not go in the garden bin.
  • Glass is usually collected with the rubbish because the vehicle has a separate compartment. Flats and sheltered housing may have a communal bin or a smaller container. Rural rounds use smaller vehicles. Boxes with handles are available for elderly and disabled residents. The glass page says purple bags containing glass are no longer collected, and that the glass is reprocessed in Cwmbran. That page was last updated on 28th January 2026.
  • Garden registration for 2026 is closed. The fortnightly window on the page runs from 2nd March 2026 to 4th December 2026, at £55 a bin, with no January 2027 collection. A wheeled bin is described as the equivalent of 3 of the old brown bags (80 litre each).
