Moray bin collection days

In Moray the green bin is the rubbish bin, not the recycling bin. It is collected every three weeks, with the recycling containers, and it has to be out by 7.30am. The brown bin is fortnightly and takes garden waste and food. The council says around 50% of an average bin could have been recycled.

Good to know in Moray

  • The code of practice volumes on the domestic collection page are a minimum of 40 litres a week for paper and card, 70 litres for metals, plastics and cartons, 20 litres for glass and 20 litres for food, and a maximum of 80 litres for non-recyclable waste.
  • A larger green bin is not automatic. The quoted policy is that a household of 6 or more, and/or with more than one child in nappies, may exchange a 240 litre bin for a 360 litre bin if they recycle fully. There is no second green bin, and black bags beside the bin are not taken.
  • Only one residual bin is emptied per household on each three-weekly collection. Ash must be cold and wrapped in newspaper.
  • Recycling containers are separate for paper and card, glass, and cans and plastics. The what-goes page does not give those containers a colour. Beverage cartons are listed with paper and card, not with the cans.
  • Garden waste has been charged since 01 April 2019. Food waste is free. Dog fouling and cat litter do not go in the brown bin.
  • Staffed centres named on the what-goes page are Gollachy in Buckie, Chanonry in Elgin, Waterford in Forres, Balloch Road in Keith and Spey Bay at Dallachy. The recycling email is waste@moray.gov.uk. Assisted collections use a form for people who cannot move bins to the kerb.
  • The domestic page says the fixed penalty for fly-tipping is £500, and that not paying it can lead to a fine of up to £40,000 and or up to 2 years in prison. That is the council's wording on the bin page, not a separate enforcement guide.

Bin questions in Moray

How often does Moray empty the green bin?

Every three weeks, together with the recycling containers. The brown bin is fortnightly. Put the right containers out by 7.30am.

Can I have a bigger green bin in Moray?

Only if the household meets the policy the council quotes: family size of 6 or more and/or more than one child in nappies, and full use of the recycling service. A 240 litre bin may then be exchanged for a 360 litre bin. A second green bin is not sold.

Is Moray food waste charged?

No. The what-goes page says the charge from 01 April 2019 is for garden waste. Food waste is collected free of charge. Apply for a garden waste permit for the garden part of the brown bin.
