Neath Port Talbot bin collection days

Neath Port Talbot collects recycling every week and non-recyclable rubbish every fortnight. Recycling is sorted at the kerb into two white bags (one for plastics, tins and cans, one for cardboard, cartons and paper), a lidless black box for glass and a food waste caddy. Refuse goes in a single black wheelie bin, or up to 3 black bags where a bin does not fit, and garden waste goes out fortnightly in green sacks on the same day as the refuse. There is no limit on how much recycling you can put out, but the council will not take side waste.

Garden waste

Garden waste is collected free of charge. There is no annual charge for the garden waste collection: the council has chosen not to introduce one even though Welsh Government lets authorities charge. New users and anyone needing extra or replacement sacks pay a subsidised £1.75 per bag through the online equipment order, including when sacks have gone missing. Green sacks are collected fortnightly on the same day as the wheelie bin or black bag collection. The council's pages do not set a closed season, so check your bin day finder for the next date.

If your bin was missed

Use the online missed collection service. Before you start, check that it really was your collection day, that the bin or bags were out before 6am (or the evening before), and that you did not exceed one wheelie bin or 3 black bags, because the crew will not return for side waste. Textiles are no longer picked up with the recycling, so a bag of clothes left behind is not a missed collection. Report by midnight on your usual collection day.

Your nearest tip

Good to know in Neath Port Talbot

  • The council merged its paper and card collections, so cardboard, cartons and paper now share a white bag. The old black paper boxes have not been withdrawn: use yours for glass instead (glass only, nothing mixed in), or take boxes and lids to a recycling centre to be recycled as hard plastic.
  • The No Side Waste Policy means crews take one wheelie bin, or 3 black bags for homes without a bin, every fortnight and leave any extra. Households that recycle everything they can and still have too much refuse can apply online for an exemption; the resulting sticker allocation lasts 12 months and the Side Waste Enforcement Team follows up applications in person.
  • Nappies and absorbent hygiene products are no longer covered by side waste exemptions. Instead you order purple AHP bags, which are collected fortnightly alongside the black bin or bags and do not count towards the one-bin limit. Feminine hygiene products, pet waste and puppy pads stay in the black bin. Households already on the weekly hygiene collection keep that service.
  • Textiles are not collected at the kerbside any more, and needles or other clinical waste cannot go through any council waste service: ask your health board or the supplier who issued them.
  • Garden waste is one of the few free sack services left in Wales. Sacks are collected fortnightly with the refuse; branches must be under 5cm thick and soil, stones, timber, invasive weeds and animal bedding are refused. Extra or replacement sacks cost £1.75 each from the online equipment order, which also handles new bins, boxes and bags and can be tracked through a myNPT account.
  • Bulky collections cost £29.50 for up to 7 items, booked and paid online with a chosen date. A table and four chairs count as five items; a bed frame, mattress and headboard as three. Put items at the front of the property the night before, keep mattresses and sofas dry, and note that garden waste, black bags, glass, mirrors, paint, boilers, doors, windows and building waste are not accepted. Cancel at least 48 hours ahead for a refund. Usable furniture can go to the Enfys Foundation (01639 641631) or the Reuse Shop at Briton Ferry.
  • All three recycling centres (Briton Ferry, Cymmer and Lower Cwmtwrch, which is just over the border in Powys) require a booked slot, and staff will ask you to open bags and sort the contents on arrival, so sort before you leave home.
  • Bank holiday weeks shift collections by a day: the council's bank holiday page lists the usual and revised dates for each week, and myNPT offers a free email reminder the day before your collection plus a downloadable calendar.

Bin questions in Neath Port Talbot

How often are bins collected in Neath Port Talbot?

Recycling (white bags, glass box and food caddy) is collected weekly. The black wheelie bin or black bags are collected fortnightly, and green garden waste sacks go out with the refuse on the same fortnightly day.

Will Neath Port Talbot take extra black bags next to my bin?

No. Crews collect one wheelie bin, or 3 black bags for homes without a bin, each fortnight and leave anything extra. If you recycle fully and still cannot manage, apply online for a side waste exemption; nappies and hygiene waste are handled through the separate purple bag scheme instead.

Is garden waste collection free in Neath Port Talbot?

Yes, there is no subscription. Green sacks are collected fortnightly with your refuse. If you are new to the service or need more sacks, each one costs £1.75 through the online equipment order.

Where does paper go now in Neath Port Talbot?

Paper, cardboard and cartons all go together in a white recycling bag. The black paper box is no longer needed for paper; use it for glass bottles and jars, or take it to a recycling centre.

How do I report a missed bin in Neath Port Talbot?

Use the online missed collections service by midnight on your collection day. The council only returns if the bin or bags were out before 6am, within the one-bin or 3-bag limit, and contained the right materials.

How much is a bulky waste collection in Neath Port Talbot?

£29.50 for up to 7 items, booked and paid online in advance. Items go at the front of the property the night before, kept dry and free of anything the crew cannot lift safely. Refunds need 48 hours' notice of cancellation.

Do I need to book for Neath Port Talbot recycling centres?

Yes. Briton Ferry, Cymmer and Lower Cwmtwrch all need a slot booked before you visit, and you will be asked to open any bags and sort them on site.
