North Ayrshire bin collection days

North Ayrshire splits the mainland and Cumbrae from Arran. Mainland and Cumbrae grey, blue and purple bins are collected every three weeks, and the brown bin every two weeks. Arran alternates grey and blue weekly and has no brown bin. Everywhere, bins go out by 7am and blue, purple and brown bins must not contain plastic bags.

Garden waste

Garden waste arrangements vary across the area. Mainland and Cumbrae brown bins take garden waste and food. The what-goes page does not mention a garden permit or a price. Arran has no organic collection, under an exemption the council cites from the Waste (Scotland) Regulations 2012, so garden and food are not collected there.

If your bin was missed

If a bin contains the wrong items, the council says it will not collect it and will tag it. Take the wrong items and the tag off and put the bin out on the next collection day. The what-goes page does not describe a separate missed-bin report form. Bins should have been out by 7am.

Good to know in North Ayrshire

  • The blue bin on the mainland and Cumbrae is paper and card only. On Arran the blue bin is mixed: paper, glass, metals, plastics and cartons. Using the mainland blue-bin rules on Arran would leave glass and cans out.
  • The purple bin is mainland and Cumbrae only. It takes glass bottles and jars, cans, aerosols, foil, plastic bottles, tubs and trays, and cartons. Items must be loose.
  • The brown bin takes garden waste and food together. Hedge and branch bundles of about one metre can sit beside the bin over a few weeks. Soil is named only for Bartonholm Recycling Centre.
  • Arran food goes in the grey bin. The council cites an exemption in the Waste (Scotland) Regulations 2012 for having no organic collection there.
  • A tagged bin is not a collection the crew forgot. Remove the wrong items and the tag. The page says wrong items in the waste stream cost £3 million a year to send for disposal.
  • Bulky uplifts are booked, not a weekly bin. Up to five non-upholstered items cost £30.63, plus £6.12 for each extra item, and the same prices apply to upholstered seating. A three-piece suite counts as three items. Mainland and Cumbrae white goods are Mondays; Arran white goods are Thursdays. Put items out before 7am. Call 01294 310000 for the mainland and Cumbrae, or 01770 600338 for Arran. Cancel by 3pm the working day before.
