Renfrewshire bin collection days

Renfrewshire's wheelie bins are grey for rubbish, blue for paper and cardboard, green for plastics, cans and glass, and brown for food and garden waste. Some streets get black, blue and green sacks instead, and the green sack is not the same as the green bin.

Last checked against 3 sources (www.renfrewshire.gov.uk).

Garden waste

Garden waste is a paid-for service. A garden waste permit has to be bought before garden waste can go in the brown bin. The what-goes page does not state the price. Food waste can go in the same brown bin in the council's biodegradable liners, or loose, without that permit wording.

Your nearest tip

Good to know in Renfrewshire

  • The green bin takes glass bottles and jars. The green sack, used where there is no bin, takes plastics, cans and cartons and the council says not to put glass in it.
  • Vapes and e-cigarettes stay out of every household bin because of the battery. Only the liquid pod can go in the grey bin. The battery goes to a household waste recycling centre.
  • Clinical waste is not grey-bin waste. The council asks people to email mybins@renfrewshire.gov.uk or phone 0300 300 0300.
  • Food in the brown bin uses the biodegradable liners the council provides, or goes in loose. Ordinary plastic bags are not liners. Fats and oils are left to solidify and then put in the grey bin.
  • There are 5 recycling centres. Linwood is the one that takes larger vehicles such as vans, pickups and trailers, and that visit needs a permit. The other centres are not described that way.
  • Collection days are looked up by postcode. The same page offers an email the day before each collection, or a printed schedule. Schedules change from Monday 7 September 2026.

Bin questions in Renfrewshire

How often are Renfrewshire bins emptied?

The bin pages do not state one interval for the grey, blue, green or brown bin. Enter a postcode on the collection days page. That page also says schedules change from Monday 7 September 2026.

Does the brown bin need a permit?

Garden waste does. Food waste goes in the same brown bin in a council biodegradable liner, or loose, and the page does not say food needs the garden permit.

What if my street has sacks instead of bins?

Black sacks are general waste, blue sacks are paper and cardboard, and green sacks are plastics, cans and cartons. Glass is listed for the green bin, not the green sack.
