Shropshire bin collection days

Shropshire asks you to sort your recycling into two streams: cans, plastic and glass mixed together in a purple-topped bin or boxes, and paper and cardboard in a blue bag. Rubbish goes in a general waste bin, and garden waste is a paid subscription that now runs from November to October. There is no food waste in the garden bin any more, and the council pages do not yet confirm a weekly food service.

Food waste and the national recycling rules

Shropshire does not collect food waste every week. As of 2 October 2026 the council pages BinWeek read still tell residents to put food waste in the black bin or compost it at home. They describe a new weekly food waste service planned from April 2026 but do not confirm that it is running, so BinWeek does not state that one is.

Garden waste

Garden waste is a paid-for service. To subscribe or resubscribe for the subscription year 1 November 2026 to 31 October 2027 you pay through the MiPermit website or by phone. You pay each year to renew, and need a separate subscription for each bin, up to a maximum of three per property. The price is not stated on the pages BinWeek read.

If your bin was missed

Check that your containers were out on the right day, in the right place, by 7am, with the lid closed, no extra waste beside the bin and the right waste inside. Then report a missed recycling or rubbish collection through the council's service portal, or ring the council. Reports must be made within two working days of the collection. If the council finds the collection was genuinely missed it aims to come back within two working days, and asks you to leave the container out. It does not call back to confirm.

Good to know in Shropshire

  • Cans, plastic and glass go in together. The council says there is no need to separate them, so long as the material is loose and not bagged.
  • Paper and card use a blue bag. If you have more cardboard than fits, cut or tear it small, flatten boxes and secure the pile beside the bag so it does not blow away. The council will not recycle paper or card put out in plastic bags, and you can ask for an extra blue bag.
  • The council does not collect from the side of the rubbish bin, and bins must be light enough to move with one hand. It reserves the right not to collect a bin that is unsafe to unload.
  • Household batteries, including lithium-ion batteries at the recycling centres, can be recycled. At the kerbside the council says normal household batteries go in a clear plastic bag beside the recycling boxes, and that lithium batteries cannot be collected from the kerbside.
  • Garden waste is a subscription, with a separate payment for each bin up to three per property, and a subscription year that runs from 1 November 2026 to 31 October 2027. The council stopped taking food waste in the garden bin, so food waste currently goes in the black bin or a compost heap.
  • Containers should be out by 7am on your day. The council says it will investigate a miss, and that it will not call you back with the result.
  • Shropshire has five household recycling centres, and the council says a van may need a permit and that you can book a visit.
