South Lanarkshire bin collection days

South Lanarkshire's rubbish bin is black or green. Paper and card are blue. Glass, cans and plastics are a light grey bin. Food, and garden waste if you have a permit, share a burgundy bin. Cartons such as Tetrapak go in the black or green rubbish bin, not the blue bin. Put bins out before 7am with the lid shut.

Garden waste

Garden waste is a paid-for service. Garden waste goes in the burgundy bin only with a valid permit. Food waste in the same bin does not need that permit. The pages read do not state the permit price. Home composting is described separately and is not the same as the burgundy collection.

If your bin was missed

Do not report a bin that was due yesterday or today; it may still be emptied by the end of the next working day. If the whole street is unemptied, leave the bin out. Do not report a bin that was not out before 7am, had an open lid, could not be reached, or was too heavy. Soil and rubble should not be in the bin. A tag means it will not be emptied. The online form is for a bin that was presented correctly.

Your nearest tip

Good to know in South Lanarkshire

  • Light grey collections take place every four weeks. Flats can ask for a 240-litre light grey bin if there is room to store it. The black or green bin's frequency is not on its page.
  • Burgundy food liners have to be compostable and 7 litres. Buy them in supermarkets or online. The kitchen caddy has a lockable lid. Scrape food in quickly if you want to avoid maggots.
  • Garden waste in the burgundy bin needs the permit. Grass, leaves, flowers and small branches are in. Soil, turf, hay and sheep's wool packaging are out. Tree trunks go to a centre.
  • The separate garden waste page also calls the garden container a burgundy bin and repeats grass, leaves, flowers and small branches. It spends the rest of the page on home composting, including uncooked scraps, and it says not to compost cooked food, meat or fish at home.
  • Batteries and gas bottles never go in the black or green bin. Gas bottles can be returned to the supplier or taken to one of six household waste and recycling centres. A tagged bin is not emptied.
  • Hardback books can go in the blue bin, though the council would rather they were donated. Drinks cartons are refused in the blue bin and named for the black or green bin.
