Vale of Glamorgan bin collection days

The Vale of Glamorgan sorts recycling at the kerb: a grey caddy for glass, an orange bag for cardboard, a white bag for paper, a blue bag for metals, plastics and cartons, a green caddy for food and a small white bag for batteries, all collected every week. Black bags of non-recyclable waste are collected every three weeks with a limit of three bags of 60-litre capacity. Everything goes out before 7am and the crews may come any time up to 9pm.

Garden waste

Garden waste is a paid-for service. Garden waste is a subscription service and 2025/26 subscriptions do not roll over; existing customers must subscribe again for 2026/27 through their existing account. Half-year subscriptions starting in August cost £22.50 for up to 8 bags per fortnight or £32.50 for more than 8 bags. The annual service reopens in March 2027. Extra bags are sold at libraries, and garden waste is accepted free at the recycling centres. Fortnightly collections run until 27 November 2026 (from 02 March 2026 for annual subscribers and from 03 August 2026 for half-year subscribers). Between 30 November 2026 and 26 February 2027 subscribers book winter collections as they need them.

If your bin was missed

Check the council's collection updates page first; it lists delayed areas in Barry, Penarth and the Rural Vale by 9am the next morning, and if your area is listed there is no need to report. Otherwise report online and leave the containers out: waste supervisors reply within 48 hours (not counting weekends and bank holidays) to say whether a crew will return. Return trips are normally only made for black bags, hygiene waste, food waste, assisted collections or whole streets; a single missed recycling collection waits for the next weekly round. Report the day after collection, after checking the updates page at 9am. Containers that were stickered, out after 7am, overfull or wrongly sorted are not treated as missed.

Your nearest tip

Good to know in Vale of Glamorgan

  • Separated recycling arrived in stages: the Rural Vale in 2019, Barry in 2020 and finally Penarth, Dinas Powys, Llandough, Sully and nearby from 17 April 2023. Flats with communal bins are outside the scheme. Households with little recycling can swap the bags for a single quad bag with four compartments.
  • Only council-issued bags, caddies and liners are collected, never single-use plastic bags. Small electricals go loose on top of a recycling container, not inside one. Crews fold the empty bags into the grey glass caddy when they return them.
  • The three black bag limit is enforced and residents are asked not to pile bags with neighbours. Households with six or more people, lots of pet waste, ash from a log burner or other waste they cannot reduce can apply for an Additional Bag Allowance; approved households collect purple sacks from the Civic Offices in Barry for the extra bag. Call 01446 700111 to discuss it.
  • A black hygiene caddy for nappies, wipes and incontinence or sanitary products costs a one-off £10 and is emptied on the black bag day every three weeks, lined with a strong bag. Barry houses can also join a free trial that collects absorbent hygiene products with the weekly recycling.
  • Kerbside textile collections began rolling out to houses across the Vale in October 2026 as part of the weekly recycling round, with no sign-up needed.
  • Food caddy liners are restocked by tying one to the outdoor caddy handle on collection day, if the crew has stock, or picked up from a library or the Civic Offices reception in Barry. Pumpkins can be chopped into the caddy or left on top if small.
  • Garden waste is paid-for and fortnightly from March (or August for half-year subscribers) to 27 November 2026, then on request between 30 November 2026 and 26 February 2027. Subscriptions sit on individual accounts, and 2025/26 customers must re-subscribe for 2026/27.
  • Both recycling centres (Barry on the Atlantic Trading Estate, 8am to 6pm, and Llandow, 8am to 4pm) are appointment-only except for real Christmas trees, take no more than three bags of general waste per booking, which must be sorted on site, and only 2 tyres at a time. Vans and trailers need a £20 permit, a vehicle under 3330kg gross weight and are limited to one visit a month. The Barry Re-Use Shop next door (10am to 4pm) needs no booking.
  • Black bag waste goes to an energy recovery facility in Cardiff that generates electricity for the National Grid; the council says almost half of what goes into black bags could have been recycled.

Bin questions in Vale of Glamorgan

How often are black bags collected in the Vale of Glamorgan?

Every three weeks, with a maximum of three black bags of 60-litre capacity each, tied and at the collection point before 7am. Side waste beside the bags is not collected and can bring a fine. Bags can be stored in a dustbin or wheeled bin between collections and the bin put out instead, at your own risk.

What goes in each recycling bag in the Vale of Glamorgan?

Glass bottles and jars in the grey caddy, cardboard in the orange bag, paper in the white bag, metals, plastics and cartons in the blue bag, food in the green caddy and household batteries in the small white bag. Small electricals sit loose on top. All are collected every week and lids come off glass and go in the blue bag.

How much is garden waste collection in the Vale of Glamorgan?

A half-year subscription from August costs £22.50 for up to 8 bags a fortnight or £32.50 for more than 8 bags, with fortnightly collections to 27 November 2026 and bookable winter collections from 30 November 2026 to 26 February 2027. Annual subscriptions reopen in March 2027. Garden waste is free to take to a recycling centre.

Why was my recycling stickered and left?

A sticker means the container was too full or too heavy, had an item in it that does not belong, or was the wrong container. It is not a missed collection. Take it back in, re-sort it and put it out again the following week; recycling is weekly so the wait is short.

How do I dispose of nappies in the Vale of Glamorgan?

Either in the black bag, or buy a black hygiene caddy for a one-off £10 and put it out, lined with a strong bag, on your black bag day every three weeks. Houses in Barry can sign up for a free trial that collects nappies, incontinence pads and stoma bags with the weekly recycling.

Do I need to book the Vale of Glamorgan recycling centres?

Yes. Barry and Llandow are appointment-only, with your confirmation email and proof of residency on the windscreen, and the only exception is dropping off a real Christmas tree. You can bring at most three bags of general waste per visit and they are sorted on site. Vans and trailers also need a £20 permit and can visit once a month. The Barry Re-Use Shop can be visited without booking.
