Wolverhampton bin collection days

Wolverhampton uses three wheeled bins: a black bin for recycling, a brown or green bin for general waste and a purple bin for garden waste if you pay for the service. The council is strict about contamination, tagging and refusing to empty recycling bins that hold the wrong items. Weekly food waste collections have been announced but, as of early October 2026, the council still tells households to put food in the general waste bin.

Food waste and the national recycling rules

Wolverhampton does not collect food waste every week. As of 3 October 2026 the council's waste and recycling page said new weekly food waste collections would be introduced across the city later this year. They will be free, and caddies, liners and details of the service are to be delivered over the coming months. Until then the council's list puts food waste in the general waste bin.

If your bin was missed

Do not report a bin on the day it is missed, because crews may still be working. If every other bin in your road has been collected, use the council's online form, which first asks whether the bin was tagged orange, put out on the right day and out before 6.30am. The council cannot rearrange a collection when the bin was contaminated, put out late or on the wrong day, or when your next collection is within 2 working days. If the council was at fault, it says the crew may take up to 2 working days to return. You have two working days to report it. For example, a bin missed on Monday must be reported by 5pm on Wednesday.

Your nearest tip

Good to know in Wolverhampton

  • Since 29 January 2024 the council has not emptied a black recycling bin that contains the wrong items. Crews put an orange tag on it, and you must take the bin in and remove the highlighted items. If everything highlighted has gone and nothing new has been added, the crew will empty it on your next scheduled recycling collection.
  • Recycling goes in loose, never in bags. The black bin is limited to one per household, and extra recycling beside it is not taken. The council suggests crushing cans, squashing plastic bottles with the lids back on and flattening boxes, but warns not to cram recycling in so tightly that it sticks when the bin is tipped.
  • Pizza boxes are not accepted for recycling because of food residue, and neither are wet wipes, tissues, polystyrene, soft plastic wrappers or shredded paper. Cling film, plastic bags, polystyrene, Pyrex and drinking glasses are listed for the general waste bin instead.
  • Put bins out before 6.30am on collection day and take them in by the end of the day. The general waste bin must close fully, and waste left beside it is not collected. Larger or additional general waste bins can be requested only by households of six or more people, or for medical reasons with written evidence.
  • Nappies, incontinence pads and pet waste can go in the general waste bin, but the council asks you to double bag them. Food waste is also on its accepted list for now, though the council says weekly food waste collections will start across the city later in the year.
  • The purple garden waste bin is a paid-for service and the council says it is emptied on the same day as your recycling bin. Garden waste must be placed loose, not in bags, and woody material up to six inches in diameter is accepted. Real Christmas trees are on the accepted list.
  • If the weather is bad, leave your bins at the kerbside. The council says the crew will collect them by the end of that week if it is safe to do so. Missed collections caused by a late or wrong-day bin are not rearranged.
  • The city's two Household Waste Recycling Centres are on Shaw Road in Wolverhampton and at Anchor Lane in Bilston. Both open from 8am to 4pm every day, and you need a photo ID or a proof of address as evidence you live in the city. DIY waste is limited to under 100 litres, and only four deposits in any four-week period.
