Food waste and the national recycling rules

Chesterfield collects food waste every week. Food waste recycling began in April 2026 and is collected every week in a grey 23-litre caddy. Food no longer goes in the green garden bin. Collections for communal properties are due later in 2026. Put the caddy at the property boundary by 7am. If you miss that collection the crew will not return until the next week.

Garden waste

Garden waste is a paid-for service. Garden waste collections cost a one-off fee of £43 for the fortnightly service. An additional green bin costs £18. Subscriptions run for twelve months from 1 April to 31 March of the following year. Registration for the 2026-2027 service closes on Friday 27 November 2026. A subscribed green bin is emptied every two weeks on the same day as the blue recycling bin. Allow up to 7 working days from the date you subscribe before collections begin. If you subscribe on the collection day itself, the service starts from the next scheduled collection. The permit goes on the back of the existing green bin, underneath the handles.

If your bin was missed

If the other bins on the street have not been emptied, leave yours out. The crew will empty it as soon as they can. If only your bin was missed, check My Chesterfield first, because the crew may have left it for a reason such as the wrong items or no access. A reported miss is passed to the crew, who come back as soon as they can. You must report a problem within two working days of your collection day. Bins and the food caddy need to be out by 7am, with the lid closed.

Good to know in Chesterfield

  • Recycling goes in the blue bin clean and loose, not inside bags. Rinse residue from containers first. Extra recycling can sit beside the bin in a paper bag or as flattened card tucked behind it. Extra glass must be in a box that is not cardboard. Small household electrical appliances can be left on top of the blue bin.
  • The black or grey bin is only for waste that cannot go in the blue bin, the green bin or the food caddy. Batteries, paint, oil, chemicals and building rubble stay out of it. Hazardous waste and DIY waste are not household bin waste.
  • Garden waste is a paid service. Sign up on My Chesterfield, or call 01246 345285. Card payments can also be taken at the Town Hall. You can share one green bin with a neighbour, but it has to be presented outside the address that paid. There is no Council Tax discount for opting out, and no concession for people on benefits.
  • An extra food caddy is free. Request one on 01246 345734. Compostable liners are optional and must show the seedling logo and the EN13432 standard. Plastic bags are not accepted. Lock the caddy by leaving the handle upright. The council will not collect or remove an unwanted caddy.
  • Food waste is taken to a specialist plant for anaerobic digestion, which produces biogas and a biofertiliser used on farmland. Garden waste is a separate stream and must not go in the caddy.
  • As of 3 October 2026 the food page still said communal properties would start later in 2026, and the garden waste page said registration for 2026-2027 closes on Friday 27 November 2026.
