Gedling bin collection days

Gedling publishes a green recycling list, a short glass-box list and a paid brown garden bin. The general waste bin has no yes-list of its own. Food waste is not collected separately yet. Collection dates sit behind an address search, and the pages read here do not state a week-by-week pattern for household waste, recycling or glass.

Last checked against 8 sources (www.gedling.gov.uk, www.legislation.gov.uk).

Food waste and the national recycling rules

Gedling has a transitional arrangement for weekly food waste. Gedling Borough Council is listed in the schedule to the Environment Act 2021 (Commencement No. 9 and Transitional Provisions) Regulations 2024 with a separate food waste collection date of 1 October 2027. The council's own simpler recycling page says food waste collections will not start until October 2027 across Nottinghamshire.

Garden waste

Garden waste is a paid-for service. The 2026-27 service is £45 for one brown bin. Each extra brown bin is £23. Sign-ups for 2026/27 have closed. There is no concession and no refund. The bin stays council property. A charge can apply if the council cannot get the bin back after a cancellation. Collections are every two weeks from April to March, with one collection in December and none in January and February. A subscription by 23 March 2026 was due a sticker by 1 April 2026. Later stickers are aimed at within 10 working days. Bins go out by 6am. If the bin is still full at 3pm, report it and crews aim to return within 7 working days. Side waste is not taken. Material is composted at Oxton. Extra garden waste can go to the household waste recycling centre on Hollinwood Lane in Calverton. Paper calendars are not being posted this year.

If your bin was missed

The bin needs to be out by 6am, with the lid shut, the handle towards the road, and the house number on it. Do not report before 2pm, because the crew may still be on the round. A garden bin without the current 2026/27 sticker is not a missed collection. Recycling and glass are not returned for unless they were missed on the previous scheduled collection. Excess waits until the next pickup. Call 0115 901 3621 or use the online form. Report within 3 working days. The council aims to return within 7 working days, and only if the bin was presented correctly and was not contaminated.

Good to know in Gedling

  • Recycling must be empty, clean and loose. Bagged recycling can cause a lorry load to be rejected and sent to the incinerator. From 31 March 2026 the simpler recycling page adds foil, metal trays, cartons, Tetra Pak, plastic pots, tubs, trays that are not black, and plastic tubes. Glass stays in the box, not the green bin.
  • The glass box should be filled only to the brim. Lids blow away, so leave the lid off, and the council no longer supplies replacement lids. Clean metal lids are on the no-thanks list for the box. The recycling list says those loose lids go in the general waste bin. The glass page does not say how often the box is emptied.
  • Batteries go in a plastic bag on top of the general or recycling bin on collection day, not inside it, and not car or industrial batteries. The what-goes menu has no separate general-waste item list. The waste and recycling policy page is a link to a PDF, which these tools do not read.
  • A home of 1 to 5 people is entitled to 240 litres, with a smaller 180l bin if they ask. Six or seven people can have 2 x 180 litres. Eight or more can have 2 x 240 litres. A larger bin may need proof of who lives there. Passports are not accepted. The bin team is on 0115 901 3901.
  • Garden waste for 2026/27 is closed at £45, or £23 for another bin. There is one December collection and none in January or February. Stickers ordered by 23 March 2026 were due by 1 April 2026. Composting is at Oxton, and the tip for extra garden waste is Hollinwood Lane, Calverton. Enquiries go to enquiries@gedling.gov.uk.
  • The collection checker now shows household waste, recycling, glass and, from April 2026, garden waste, as a list or a calendar you can print. Paper calendars are not being posted. The checker page itself does not print a frequency.
  • As of 3 October 2026 none of the bin pages read here describe a food caddy. The council page and the national schedule both put a separate food collection in 2027, the schedule on 1 October 2027.
