Melton bin collection days

Melton collects the black rubbish bin once a fortnight. The brown bin is the dry recycling bin. There is no food waste round yet. Garden waste is Biffa's Green Waste Club, every 2 weeks, and it is separate from the council's own crews. Bins go out after 6pm the evening before and before 7.30am.

Food waste and the national recycling rules

Melton does not collect food waste every week. Melton does not collect food waste separately. The food page says a service is being worked on and could be in place in April 2028. A council meeting on 12 February 2026 had an update from the previous leader. Until then, food goes in the black bin or a home compost bin, not the brown bin.

Garden waste

Garden waste is a paid-for service. Biffa runs the Green Waste Club as an optional subscription, every 2 weeks. The council page does not list a price or what the green bin takes. It says to email gwc@biffa.co.uk or call 0800 0858 286, and that the council customer team may not be able to help.

If your bin was missed

Report a black or brown bin on the missed bin form if it was at the collection point and held the right materials. Crews empty bins up until 5pm. Bank holidays change the collection day. Green waste misses go to the Green Waste Club, not this form. Leave the bin out until it is emptied. The council says it returns within 48 hours. Report within 24 hours on the next working day after the collection was due. The same page also says that a report after 24 hours of the scheduled collection day will not get a return visit.

Good to know in Melton

  • The brown bin page does not say whether that bin is weekly or fortnightly. The black bin page does: once a fortnight. Small electricals, textiles and batteries go beside the bin in separate carrier bags, not inside it. The brown page says two bags of textiles or electricals per collection, not mixed, and battery collection is limited to 1 small carrier bag. Items that are not taken can be put out again the following week. The brown page says that capacity is limited.
  • Batteries must not go in the black bin. Vapes must not go in the black bin or the brown bin. The brown page sends vapes to a household waste site or some supermarkets. Mobile phones are directed to Envirofone, not the kerbside bag.
  • Side waste beside the black bin is not taken unless you have arranged it. The number on the black bin page is 01664 502502. Bring the bin back in by the end of the collection day. The black bin page was last updated 14 April 2026.
  • Food in the brown bin can cause a whole load to be rejected. The food page says peelings, eggshells, tea bags and coffee grounds can go in a home compost bin, and that meat, cooked food and dairy are the reason a future food round would still matter if you already compost.
  • The missed bin page says you need your address and the planned collection date. You can track the report with a My Account login. It was last updated 1 June 2026.

Bin questions in Melton

Does Melton collect food waste?

Not as its own round. Food goes in the black bin, or suitable scraps go in a home compost bin. The council says a separate service could start in April 2028. Do not put food in the brown bin or the green garden bin.

When do Melton bins have to be out?

After 6pm the previous evening and before 7.30am. Crews start at 7.30am and can still be emptying bins up until 5pm. The lid has to be closed.

How do I report a missed Melton bin?

Within 24 hours on the next working day, if it was out by 7.30am and had the right materials. The council says it comes back within 48 hours. A later report waits until the next scheduled day. Garden misses go to Biffa on 0800 0858 286.
