Food waste and the national recycling rules

Oadby and Wigston collects food waste every week. Food waste is collected every week on the usual bin day, by a different vehicle. Homes get a 7 litre kitchen caddy and a 23 litre outdoor caddy. A compostable bag or any plastic bag except a black bag can line the caddy. Some private flats with shared bins had not received caddies when the page was updated on 18 June 2026.

Garden waste

Garden waste is a paid-for service. £60 for the year 1 April 2026 to 31 March 2027, with no reduction if you join late. An extra bin is £37.50 for a 240 litre bin or £27.50 for a 140 litre bin. The continuity deadline the page names was Friday 13 March. Fortnightly, with no collections in December, January or February. A permit goes on the rear of the bin, facing the street. Only the council's wheeled bin is collected.

If your bin was missed

If the bin was out and did not contain the wrong items, call customer services on 0116 288 8961. Do not call before 2pm, because the crew may still be out. A contaminated recycling bin is not collected until the wrong items are removed, and then only on the next scheduled day. The black bin and green bin pages say within 48 hours. The recycling page says within 24 hours. Bins go out by 6.30am and should be back in by 10pm.

Good to know in Oadby and Wigston

  • The standard black bin is 140 litre. A swap to 240 litre costs £38. Each home gets one black bin. No side waste. The customer services number on these pages is 0116 288 8961.
  • The brown bin page does not print the material list. It says Casepak in Leicester publishes what that plant accepts, and that Leicestershire County Council has a dispose-of guide. On this council page, recycling has to be loose, rinsed and dried, with lids left on, and large cardboard can sit beside the bin.
  • Food liners can be compostable or plastic, but not black bags. Do not stand the caddy on top of another bin. Flats that still have no caddy are the ones the council says it could not get into or could not confirm with the building manager.
  • Garden waste in winter can go to the household waste site on Wigston Road, Oadby, LE2 5JE, or into a home compost bin. The garden page does not collect fallen fruit. Weeds are accepted if the soil is shaken off.
  • The black bin page was last updated 9 July 2026. The food and garden pages were last updated 18 June 2026.
