Onchan bin collection days

Onchan, the district on the hill above Douglas, is the Island’s second-largest local authority and collects its own refuse. Collection days are published as a PDF on the Refuse Services page, the rules on what goes in the bin follow the Energy from Waste plant’s limits, and the Surveyors Department handles missed, broken and missing bins.

Last checked against 4 sources (www.onchan.org.im, www.gov.im).

Check your bin day

Use Onchan’s own page for your bin day

Isle of Man local authorities publish collection days as fixed weekdays, road lists, maps or PDF calendars rather than an address search BinWeek’s lookup service can query, so the page links to the authority’s own page and lets you set your own bin day.

Set your own bin day

These dates are the ones you enter. BinWeek does not get them from Onchan. Check them on the council’s site (opens in a new tab) (www.onchan.org.im).

If your bin was missed

If your bin has not been collected by the end of your normal collection day, contact the Surveyors Department on (01624) 675564 option 2, or surveyors@onchan.org.im. Check first that the bin was at the edge of the property and held nothing the Energy from Waste Plant would reject.

Your nearest tip

Good to know in Onchan

  • Everything in domestic and commercial bins goes to the Isle of Man Government Energy from Waste facility, so only waste suitable for incineration should go in. No hot ashes, and no stones, bricks, rubble, soil, asbestos, large timbers or electrical items, which damage the vehicle; bins containing them are not emptied.
  • The Authority will not come onto your property to collect a bin, to avoid accidental damage, so it must be at the edge of your property. Waste left beside the bin is not taken, to protect staff from broken glass, needles and contamination; ask about a larger or additional bin instead.
  • Domestic bins are not weighed. Collection and disposal charges are based on an average cost per household, and only commercial waste is weighed and charged accordingly.
  • Residents who cannot physically move their bin can request an assisted domestic refuse collection. Broken or missing bins are reported to the Surveyors Department on (01624) 675564 option 2, after checking it has not ended up at a neighbour’s or blown away.
  • District recycling bins are at the Hub car park on School Road, the car park by the play area at Onchan Pleasure Park, the entrance to Maple Avenue at Birch Hill and beside Ballachrink Stores on Ballachrink Drive. All take paper, glass, cans and plastic; all except the Pleasure Park also take cardboard and milk cartons. The Hub’s facilities were temporarily removed at the time of writing.
  • Onchan uses the Eastern Civic Amenity Site at Middle Park Industrial Estate in Braddan, which in winter (1 October to 31 March) opens 8am to 4pm every day.
