Port Erin bin collection days

Port Erin Village Commissioners run their own refuse collection under the Public Health Act 1936 and publish an unusually candid FAQ about it. The rules are simple: bin at the edge of the property with the handle facing the road by 7am, nothing on top of or beside it, and nothing the Energy from Waste Plant would reject.

Last checked against 4 sources (www.porterin.gov.im, www.gov.im).

Check your bin day

Use Port Erin’s own page for your bin day

Isle of Man local authorities publish collection days as fixed weekdays, road lists, maps or PDF calendars rather than an address search BinWeek’s lookup service can query, so the page links to the authority’s own page and lets you set your own bin day.

If your bin was missed

If your bin has not been collected by the end of your normal collection day, contact the Commissioners’ Office on (01624) 832298. Common reasons for a bin being left are that it held waste the Energy from Waste Plant would reject, or that it was not at the edge of the property.

Good to know in Port Erin

  • Place the wheelie bin at the curtilage of the property with the handle facing the road by 7am on collection day. The operatives return it to that spot once emptied, and will not go onto your property, so a bin left on a public footpath should be taken back in as soon as possible after collection.
  • The crews are instructed not to take bags or boxes left on top of or next to the bin. The Commissioners explain this is because bags have cut hands when they contained broken glass; use the recycling sites in the village to reduce what goes in the bin.
  • A standard household wheeled bin holds 240 litres, which the Commissioners say is calculated as enough for two weeks of normal household refuse. The average weekly weight of a standard refuse bin is 20.75 kg, just over a tonne of waste per household a year.
  • Bins damaged through fair wear and tear are replaced free; otherwise a charge is made. Residents who cannot move their bin through health or infirmity can ask the office for assistance as part of the collection service.
  • Bring banks for glass and metal cans are at the Bridson Street bus shelter, Breagle Glen car park, Marashen Crescent, Spaldrick by the Bradda archway, Milner Close, Ballakilley Close, Church View Court and the Station Road car park. Paper and plastic bottles go to the Southern Civic Amenity Site on Castletown Road in Port St Mary. Problems with the Government-run sites are reported on 686540.

Bin questions in Port Erin

What time should bins be out in Port Erin?

By 7am on the morning of your collection day, at the edge of the property with the handle facing the road.

Why did the binmen leave my bin in Port Erin?

Usually because it contained waste that would be rejected at the Energy from Waste Plant, or because it was not at the edge of the property. If it has not been emptied by the end of your collection day, call (01624) 832298.

Will Port Erin take black bags next to the bin?

No. Refuse that is not in the bin is not taken, to protect the crews from injuries from broken glass.
