Food waste and the national recycling rules

Rutland collects food waste every week. The food round is live and weekly, on the normal bin day. Most homes should have a 23 litre outdoor caddy and a small kitchen caddy, and a 140 litre black bin. Liners have to be biodegradable. The council does not supply them. Black bags and supermarket carrier bags are not liners. The outdoor caddy is not emptied if the food is not in a biodegradable liner. Flats keep their shared rubbish bins. Their caddies were due later.

Garden waste

Garden waste is a paid-for service. £73 per green bin for 2026 to 2027. Sign-up opened on 19 January 2026. Direct debits renew on 23 February 2026 if you change nothing. The full price applies even if you join late, up to the end of November. Households on local Council Tax Support get a 25% discount in 2026/27. The service year is 1 April to 31 March. Collections are fortnightly, less often in December, January and February. There is no sticker. Crews use an in-cab system called Whitespace. A new subscriber should allow ten working days before the first collection. Cancel within 14 days for a full refund.

Good to know in Rutland

  • The standard black bin is now 140 litre. An extra 240 litre black bin is for five or more permanent residents, or for medical waste such as bedpans and stoma bags. Families with children in nappies can swap the 140 litre bin for a 240 litre one. Proof is required, and people who already had extra capacity have to apply again. The food page says an application approved after Friday 3rd April should be delivered within 20 working days. Until the new black bin arrives, bagged household waste can go out, and food can stay in the black bin until the caddy arrives.
  • The grey bin guide does not say whether that bin is weekly or fortnightly. It does say an extra grey bin is free. Blue bags, where used instead of a grey bin, take the same items. The food page says there are no changes to black, grey and green rounds apart from the new food caddy and the smaller black bin.
  • The green bin guide still tells people to subscribe for 2025 to 2026 from 31 March 2025. The subscription page is the later one: £73 for 2026 to 2027, from 19 January 2026, renewing on 23 February 2026 if a direct debit is already in place. A 25% discount applies for Council Tax Support. If that refund has not arrived by Tuesday 7 April 2026, email greenwaste@rutland.gov.uk.
  • Food is 70% water on the food page. A survey on that page got over 1,000 responses: 73% supported the national changes, 91% agreed with recycling more, 67% said they were likely to use a weekly food caddy, 44% preferred a smaller black bin every two weeks, 32% preferred a less frequent collection and 13% preferred both. Black bin waste goes to Eastcroft in Nottingham. Food goes to an anaerobic digestion plant near Kettering.
  • Customer services are 01572 722 577. Garden waste in a black or grey bin can stop that bin being emptied until it is removed.
